Germinating seeds quickly
    #477842 - 09/15/10 09:35 PM (14 years, 2 months ago)

I just started up some good seeds I forgot I had, pretty much just as an experiment, but was wondering, how can you germinate seeds quickly? Other than the regular method of scarifying, soaking in water, and placing in between wet paper towels.

and how early can you give a seedling nutrients?

seedlings do not need nutrients.  Scarification is usually not necessary.  I do not think there is a faster tek than the one you referred to.

Add a little heat.  75-80 degrees does wonders for me...  Just make sure not to let them get too soggy, they will rot really fast with the heat!

Moist towel in a zip-lock bag on top of the fridge. Simple and works killer.

I leave mine on top of a PC monitor (old fishbowl kind) or my PS3 or laptop, or anything like that. A TV would work too I'm sure.

Thanks for the info. I put my 6 scarified seeds in between the wet paper and inside the bag, then put it on my computer. It's been about 18 hours and 5 of 6 have popped their radicles out.

Off to a good start

Edit: Also, this is just about how I started haha. Just popping seeds for the hell of it because I got them in my bag. Before I knew it, I was 1 HPS and 9 CFLs in

Seedlings don't need nutrients until the first two leafs yellow and fall off. Not the first jagged leaves, the little rounded guys...I can't remember the name, something with a C. Cotyledons methinks.

You got it right   It depends on the medium you use for growth.  If you use a nutrient rich soil you could go a month easy in some cases with no extra food in the water.  Grow hydro and you'll need to start giving them nutes very early on.

The Cotyledons can stay on the plant without wilting/falling off for weeks. I give my seedlings in coco 1/4 strength nutrients once their first true set of leaves come in and if there's a bunch in my tray that are still on their cotyledons and are looking a bit dry I'm not shy to give them 300ppm nutrients.

In coco I notice plants can become very deficient in nitrogen within a week (or before their 2nd set of true leaves comes in) even when giving them dilute nutrients which I found out when trying to be lazy and giving around 200ppm nutes of GH Floranova grow to some seedlings.

Same thing happens in perlite too.  Actually have some seedlings whose single blade leaves are a bit yellow right now.  Off to the hydro shop to pick up some fresh veg nutes.

As always if you listen to your plant you should know when they need more and less food.

I've lately been curious about seedling health early on. I've been trying a 2:3 ratio of micro/bloom and even tried a ratio of 2:1 micro/bloom for the hungry ones usually fed at 300+ppm on seedlings I'm very surprised how quickly some of the seedlings become deficient with feeding this. I've feed this flora mix or floranova grow at 600-770 ppm on plants still in a plug tray (under 1.5oz of coco) and all were fine and some looked like they wanted more. I'm thinking of trying a Fish fertilizer for my seedlings to see if it keeps stuff green.

Which do you use?

I have some BioBizz Fishmix which I think is fairly good I have a seperate product by BioBuzz called Alg-a-mic. So far these are the best products of the sort I've tried. I have some Algen mix from House and Garden to test also.

I'm thinking of making my own or attempting to using dead fish and pond/septic enzymes I might even see how long it takes for a AACT to break down dead fish unfortunately I live in a small house and the weather is already chilly so I can't brew outside.

I'm testing out Advanced Nutrients Sensi Line up and trying my best to follow their feeding schedule.  However, I find this shit to be a bit ridiculous.  They recommend a full tbsp per gal of the grow nutes for week 1 seedlings?  I tested out a 1/4 strength solution (4 ml per gal) and that came out to just over 600 PPM!  I could only imagine what would happen if you fed a sprout what they recommend.  I was even really wary of feeding them @ 600 PPM, but fuck it, this is all about experimentation for me.  Deep down I know they're most likely going to burn here, but fuck it you can always grow more heh.

For the first week I followed their recommended flowering doses as well and ended up with 1/2 my plants not looking happy at all.  So I mixed up tonight batch at half strength and ended up at a place that's much more manageable.  1/2 strength gives me 1100 PPM with 8 ml Sensi Bloom A+B 4 ml big bud and 4 ml bud candy.  Something tells me my plants will be much happier @ 1100 ppm then 2200 which is where I was with 15 ml of Sensi A+B alone.  Maybe the fact that my water is a little hard is factoring in here, but I really want to know why they list 16 mls of base nutrients at under 1000 ppm.

What kind of a meter do you use? I like to talk EC more, because different companies use different conversions. I use Bluelab @ x500 for TDS, and x700 for PPM.

How hard is your water?

Most nutrient companies give really high dosage rates, I'm almost tempted to test some (not on my plants) at the recommended dosage. General Hydroponics is my choice and 6micro/9bloom with 140ppm water makes for 1100+ ppm nutes. I've been mostly using floranova grow until I reach 1100ppm or less if adding AN barricade, 840 or so + barricade leaves me with 1020ppm or something like that.

I am very curious as to how PPM effects yield. As far as I can tell higher PPMs don't necessarily make for higher yields I saw a grow on ICMAG done by Heath Robinson and he grew a 1lb plant on Ionic nutrients @ 840 PPM. I have friends who use nutes @ 1600 ppm+, I feed at around 1100 and I can't honestly say they're getting better yields. I might bump up my PPMs and start seeing what the plants can handle / how they react.

4 of 6 seeds have now sprouted and are showing green cotyledons, the other 2 have just been planted. I've got them under 10,800 lumens of cfl 24/0.

I've got a very small amount of Botanicare veg 3-2-4 and will have to get some more nutrients. I've been thinking about getting different nutes tho. Is it bad to switch nutrients? Will it stress the plants?

I don't think so. Especially not with hydroponic grade nutrients.

Some people might argue that if you raised a microherd in organic hydro, that switching to "chemical" nutrients would kill them. I don't think this is the case though as beneficial bacteria/fungi are used in non organic setups.
