?s on watt per sqft-also how many watts per sq-ft do you have?
    #456131 - 08/06/10 10:42 PM (14 years, 4 months ago)

so i have been reading what we want to aim for is 50 watts per sq-ft.
to find your watts per sq-ft you divide your square feet into how many watts you have??-seems right:shrug:-

i built a grow tent  7 feet by 4 feet  i have about 500 watts
this equals out to only about 17 watts per square foot
then i was reading when figuring out watts per sq ft only use the direct space lit. so my plants are 6'x3'(, okay-so that helps a bit now im getting 27 watts a foot.
I only have two plants.
what im asking is do people normally use 1000 watts in a 6'x3' area because that seems like so much.
also will 25 watts per sq-ft yield you half as much as 50 watts per sq ft- or does that have more to do with lumens and other factors?
any help is appreciated.

people generally use 1000W in a 4x4, so using 1000W in a 6x3 would actually be considered very little

thats what i was thinking.
so your saying i will not get what im expecting or ill get jack shit?
i can only fit one of my plants in 4'4'
so what i am getting from this is if i dont have 2000 watts over my two plants it would be considered "very little" ??

why would i be told

will going from outdoors to only a 400 watt HPS and 120 watts of CFL herm up the plants?

6x3' or 7x4' is an odd space for one light.

I'd use 3 x 600w's for a 7x4' area

600w = 3x3 or 3.5 x 3.5' max imo, some people do 4x4' for a 600w but get fluffy ass buds.

a 1000w can cover a 4x4' - 5x5' space any more and you're growing fluff.

2 x 1000w's or 3 x 600w's would be a good choice for that space in my opinion.

As for yield vs watts/sq ft.

I think your yield will be greater per watt to be honest, but instead of say 2lbs of rockhard buds from a 1kw in a 4x4' area you'll end up with 2.5lbs of fluffy or less dense bud in a larger area. Generally the more floorspace you cover the more bud you grow, however it wont grow as dense.

k thanks
i woke up a lil :crankey:
im still interested to hear other peoples watt to sq ft ratio
i bet alot of people/new growers never even figured it out
i thought my friends 7'8' grow room with 1000 watts had good light for 4 plants but i was so wrong. thats only 17 watts per sq ft!!
i told him and he  he said he doesn't care because "his budz are fat"

Fat airy buds or buds like this Myself I'll go with the buds grow under the right light. He may like his big buds but he's not even getting half the yield he could be.

and try doing this with 17 watts per foot
Dixie Cups , dirt, and a light = half pound

Keep the light at 50watts per sq foot simple as that. :wexican:

OK, my room is 3 foot wide, 2 foot deep, which is 6 square feet and I'm running a 400 watt light.  So that's like 66.66 watts per square foot.

I'm running 3600w over 64 sq ft which is 56.25 w. However I include my walking space in that it's closer to 70 w per sq ft.

It could just as easily be said that if you had more reading comprehension that the grower would be more useful to you.

For the record, I hang with a lot of commercial growers and they all provide substantially more than 50w per ft. Watts per square foot is also relative to how high your lights are hung. I keep my lights down as low as possible without burning the tops of my plants. Light from artificial sources diminishes in intensity rather rapidly. 3ft from the bulb you're getting 10% of the initial lumens from the bulb at 4 ft the lumens are more benign. The distance and percent varies a little between the 600 and 1000w bulbs with the 1000w's having more penetration power (able to deliver some lumens to a further distance).

the light intensity diminishes exponentially with distance regardless of the initial wattage. And yeah, 50w/ft^2 is a minimum in my opinion. I'm running 75W per ft^2 and quite frankly still feel like I have some dark corners in my closet

How high are your lights hung over your canopy to put watt/sq ft in perspective? I've hung my lights high in the past not being fully aware of how quickly intensity diminishes and believe that was the only thing keeping my yields from being stellar. Hopefully with near gear and being able to drop the lights down low I'll be able to yield impressively this time around.

It would be really cool if there was more of a benchmark for the footprint of your bulb but most people don't have lumen meters to measure light intensity at the canopy level, myself included. Is PAR radiation similar to lumens in regard of how quickly they diminish when traveling a given distance?
