I have a virus
    #424979 - 05/28/10 10:12 AM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Ok, technically it is "scareware" but still it is annoying as fuck.

I'm just throwing out this warning incase it looks like I am using a proxy, because one of the things that it does is set Internet Explorer to use a proxy.

I do use firefox though, but i don't know if it messes with it too.

I'll be back when it is dead, it is being taken care of as I post.

Most annoying part, if it had already launched before I tried to fix it. It would block all applications from opening aside for firefox.

I had something like that a while back, except it prevented everything from opening AND it was requesting my credit card info to buy security software.  It kept saying that my computer was already infected and I was shut out to protect me.  Fuckin' trojan horses.

That's what you get for not using a Mac.

Yes exact same thing probably. It said it was "scanning my comp" and said I had dangerous viruses.

Mac's have like 1% of the virii that PC's have. Been using them for 3 years now and have yet to come across a single one. I scan regularly as well.

I had the same thing a couple days ago. Start up in safemode with networking, get Spybot S&D if you don't have it already, and that should remove it.

Mac's are just as, if not more, vulnerable to attack.  Thing is, Macs make up such an insignificant portion of the computer market that malware developers don't think it's worth it to write code for macs.

Your Mac is not more secure, it's just that no one gives enough shit about Macs to pump out massive amounts of malware for them.  Gotta remember, you don't need to catch a virus to have your computer hacked into.

Anyways, this piece of malware is a russian job.  I've removed it twice from two different computers.  It's just a simple registry tweak, and some file deletion to get rid of it.  You can also download Daphne which is like an extended version of your Process Manager if you're trying to track it down.

Oh it was dead like 3 mins after I posted.

Odd thing about my comp, when I start in safe mode with networking. I can't get online.

Not really a big issue though.

I never, ever get viruses

Its all about knowing what websites and downloads are safe, Ive gotten them before, but I quickly learned how to spot a virus from 10 miles away

Its strange because this one came out of nowhere. My brother came over and used my comp for like 5 minutes, and he used IE.

I bet that's when it happened.

My GF is computer iliterate.

I'm going to run more virus protection from now on, and maybe actually update it now that I don't play wow at 3am all the time.

Yeeup  knew someone was going to come a long with that. Still means it's safer. There are a few nifty little apps I use to make my system much more secure anyway. Gotta be a bit of a foo to get your computer hacked into.
