Hydroponic methods other than ebb and flow
    #416063 - 05/11/10 08:38 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

The Ebb and Flow system is a pretty simple concept.  A pump kicks on which shoots water from a resevoir up into a table.  The water then runs back down into the resevoir through a drain once it reaches a certain height.

Pros about this system:

1.  It is easy to use and maintain.  It is probably the first type of a system that a newbie grower uses.

Cons about this system:

1.  Having to buy a bunch of rockwool all of the time.  Also, dealing with the rockwool waste is a pain.
2.  Ebb and flow tables have large resevoirs which are a pain in the ass to fill and drain on a regular basis.
3.  It can be expensive to buy a nice resevoir and table.
4.  The resevoir and table are big which can be a pain to maneuver and position if you are moving or cleaning them.

So, I ask you more experienced people what do you suggest as the next "type" of system that one should try?

DWC.  Not going to get around the reservoir problem no matter what system you use though.  And smart experienced hydro users use the absolutely largest reservoir they can fit in there.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is DWC?

Why not use something other than rockwool?

Such as neopean cubes, they are ph balanced and cheap.

I have no clue what those are.  I did a search and nothing came up.

Deep water culture.  Some people call it bubbleponics.

If your using Ebb and Flow you can also just fill your tray up with hydroton and keep your plants in little baskets.  That way you allow your plants to grow an unlimited root system, and the hydroton is reusable.

I just found these:

I can't find the ones I use for some reason.

I'll post a link as soon as I find them.

I'm no expert Mr. Hands, but I would go with a DWC.  I've never used an ebb n flow before.  I personally think a DWC is much simpler and more contained if space is an issue.  I don't do big projects, so that could be why I'm a little more biased as far as what method to choose.
