If I were to only grow 1 plant, how many CFL bulb's should be used on the plant for maximum results?

Well, I am growing two plants and I am about to buy 4 more 42w CFL's.
The more the merrier? You would probably be fine with one 42w or even 1 of a lesser bulb on the plant for a while, but if you wanted it to get bushy and full I think more light would be needed.

Maximum results? as many as you can possibly fit. Sufficient results? about 150W (real watts, not equivalent watts)

*and keep the temperature stable
I have 6 26 watt CFLs in my veg room (I'm vegging one plant at a time, right now my mother is in there) and it seems to do the job pretty well.
I had 2 plants in there, and it WAS working, but I doubt it would have given the light I wanted to flower.

Why should that mean it isn't real?

Heat is a super easy issue to solve with CFL's. With six on 24/7 in my closet the temps were around 83-86 degrees. Once I put a fan in there the temps are now stable at 73.
Btw ras, that babe in your sig is a fucking MASTER!

I know, my temperatures are stable too...but if I had 20 of them in there, it might be a little nuts
And hell yeah man. I keep thinking of putting something new in there, but she re-wins my heart every time I even come close.

You buy something like this, then buy mogul socket and cord for $25-$30, make or buy cheap relector.
http://www.amazon.com/CowboyStudio-Compact-Fluorescent-Daylight-listed/dp/B001MDOWPI
10k lumens for like $100 if you're creative.

Well these are the specs on one of the CFL lights I just bought
the top says "150 watt replacement, uses only 40 watts" (which I'm guessing means 40 watts.
output of 2,600 lumens and 2700K
How many of those bad boys would be needed for 1 plant? like 3 or 4?

Cool. 4 or 5 it is.
I'm thinking about turning a garbage can into a grow container. I'll put the plant at the bottom, Put the lights on the lid so When I put the lid on the can, They'll be pointing downwards. It seems like a good Idea...I think
Also, I know I read something before on a way to grow your plants so they don't turn out so big (or something about making them mature faster so they don't grow as big) ...because space is an issue. I can't have a 6 foot plant in my closet :P
Does anyone know where I can find some info on this?

Haha sounds like you need to do some more reading
The plants will start flowering as soon as you give them 12 hours of darkness a day. The sooner you start giving them that much darkness, the smaller they will be at harvest. In general a plant will double or triple in size when you start to flower. So if you grow the plant under 18 hours of light until it's 10" tall, then switch the lights to 12/12, then your plant will be approx. 30" tall when it's done growing. For other methods on keeping it small I suggest you use the search function and look up "LST"
Here's a trashcan lid I wired up as a reflector a couple years ago -

See if you can find the Jorge Cervantes ULTIMATE GROW DVD and ULTIMATE GROW DVD 2. They're available for sale online or free for download via torrents if you're feeling in the pirate mood, Aarrr!.
Anyways, it's a great way to cram your head full of cultivation basics and be entertained at the same time. I've watched them both several times now.

Alright, LST is pretty straight forward. Just basically tie down the plant and any main tips that it grows.
Hopefully my first grow turns out all right

yep LST is easy. Instead of a plant like this;
you want one like this;
Same yield, but better for people with height restrictions

You really feel like the LST didn't change your yield, Harry?

Ok you're right, I feel like the LST probably tripled or quadrupled my yield but I didn't want to bash on 206's picture because he has some mighty fine plants there regardless
