Im growing a 5-gallon bucket DWC hydro plant with 4 cfl's which are 42watts in a 5foot by 2foot closet and am posting a grow log. I cant post pics now but will later. Im growing one plant and maybe some morning glory on the side if i can(idea)...I will post weekly pics on growth when i get it set up.

Cool dude.
One question: Are you going to grow with just CFL's for the entire grow?
One more: What kind of seeds you got? Bagseed or commercial?
Because I'm thinking about growing (I've always wanted to) with just CFL's, maybe the tube kind if I have a lot of plants growing together. But, at the flowering stage, I'm going to switch over to a combination of CFL's and incandescent bulbs, because I know flowering plants like a lot of radiate heat.
Tell me what you be doing. Can't wait to see the photos.

I would take a look at these bulbs. They have their own ballasts and will work in a regular light socket. They're fairly inexpensive and put out good light.

Or if you got to Lowes they have the 65w in 2700k for only $16
Best deal you can find for a bulb of that wattage.

First, flowering plants do NOT like a lot of radiant heat. simply not true. incandescent bulbs are very very poor for growing cannabis, I would stay away from them at all costs.
secondly, CFL's are ONLY the compact fluorescent bulbs, the swirly ones. the long tube ones you're referencing are not CFLs, they're simply fluorescent bulbs, and come in a variety of sizes, T-12, T-8, or T-5. the higher the number the larger the diameter and lower efficiency.
and LouisCypher- all CFLs come with their own ballast included. for only a 65W bulb you will never find a bulb with an external ballast. the only bulbs that won't work in a regular socket are the very high wattage CFLs (like 150 or 200W), and although these will still have an internal ballast they will have what is called a mogul base, which just means it requires a larger diameter socket

using incandescent bulbs to grow cannabis would be a fruitless endeavor for sure.

yeah I think it's hilarious when someone sets up a grow log and the title is a long the lines of "1,000w Closet Fluoro Grow!!!" and they are basing this off of the incandescent equivalent.

Yeah, I guess your right. I mean, how would I know, I've never even grew a plant yet. So, what about Halogen lights? I know, they give off a lot of heat (which budding plants don't like), but would they be better than CFL's during the flowering stage? Is HIP and HPS the only choices?
If not, could I grow an entire plant, from seed to fruit, just with a high-watt (say 30watt) lamp socket-type CFL? Is that possible?
Also, is it best to use "Cool White" during the vegitation and "Warm Light" for the flowering? Or should I just use both CFL types the whole time?
I ask this because I heard somewhere that for flowering, the plant likes red light but during the vegi stage, it likes blue light. Is that true?
I'm sure Killuminate might be interested in knowing this too.
With much thanks, ~ TrueHerbCrystaL ~

Sorry to say you've got some learnin to do. I suggest reading jorge cervantez's book, Marijauna Horticulture. Then spend as much of your free time reading on the internet. It's hard to know when cultivating pot and reading about it on message boards who is really knowledgeable about the process and who isn't. A lot of people will bullshit you on the other sites if you let em. so having a basic understanding of the cultivation process can really be helpful in that regard.
By HIP i think you mean HID - high intensity discharge. That's a type of lighting system. Under that catagory are HPS and MH bulbs. HPS is used for flowering and yes, it is in the red spectrum and the MH is used in veg and is in the blue spectrum. Also, 30 watts isn't considered a high wattage in this game.

ok, I guess I'll rephrase. for lights IN your house, not flood lights, you will ALMOST always find an internal ballast

you did both. Anyhow, to get this back on track I think that CFL's don't compare to a good high power HID bulb but for people on a budget, in tiny spaces, or just plain nerdy and want to mess around they can grow some very good weed.
there's some very clever CFL setups posted on here if you search around enough

I have done just that HarryBudSack, and I think I found a sucessful CFL grow log I want to follow. its called Kandy Kush Grow CFL created by harri (your twin brother Harry?).
I'd like to follow this grow stylem, with the CFL's with the shades and the simple brown pots.
One question: About how many watts (roughly) from CFLs does a full-grown but compact flowering plant need?
I think I'm ready to take the cheap plung with CFL's in a closet just like Killumin, except it won't be advanced hydro, just plain soil and pot.
Thanks for the advice to search Harry: I found a lot of interesting grow projects with CFLs!

haha no Harri is not me, although I've wondered about his name as well....
here's the last CFL grow I did. I'm sure you found this in your searching but I'll like you just in case http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/251624#251624
I used about 250 real watts of CFL in that grow. note, when a cfl says it's a 100W equivalent it's actually only a 26W bulb, so keep that in mind when deciding which bulbs to use

Seriously just get (3) of these lights, and 3 of these reflectors, and you can flower 2 small plants. (roughly an Oz of dank)
http://www.lowes.com/pd_46931-75774-017801997118_0_?productId=1245125&Ntt=65%20watt&Ntk=i_products&pl=1¤tURL=/pl__0__s?newSearch=true$Ntt=65%20watt$y=0$x=0
The picture is all fucked, but basically they are a CFL on roids. It's about 2x the size of a regular twist CFL but it looks the exact same, it doesn't have the "U" bend style so it is more efficient in a horizontal setup.
That is an incredible price and I picked one up as soon as I found it because 42 watters are 20-22 bucks at the hardware store in town... WTF
Here are the reflectors
