Stealth fan
    #388737 - 03/23/10 01:10 PM (14 years, 7 months ago)

Yep, another fan thread from me.  I'm not working with a huge space and I don't need a mega fan.  I just need something that will pull enough air through a scrubber to ventilate the area and cool the light through a cooltube.  The piping will be 6" (tube, ducts etc).

Question is - what is a good speed controller to go with a Vortex 6"? I've read all sorts of threads about these things causing serious hum, or burning out fans.  The Vortex seems like a good choice, but I need to slow it to the extent that it won't make much sound.  If this isn't a good route, then I'm thinking I'll just go with a Stanley Blower.  Either that or an S&P.

Looks like the S&P might be the answer. I wish I could get a straight answer on the amount of noise these things make though. They're advertised as the quietest fan around, but I wonder if that's just speaking in terms relative to inline fans. Also, the S&P looks much more compact than a Vortex. I realized the Vortex simply isn't an option in the little space I'm using - the thing is fucking huge.

Okay, so can anyone speak of an S&P out of first hand experience? For spacial reasons, I might consider going with a 4" (Stanley or Vortex just won't do in this regard, they're too big). Would that be a total hassle given the 6" diameter of my cooltube? If so, I'd rather use a speed controller or something on a 6" just to get the volume down.

6" to 4" adapters can be had for a few bucks a piece.

Are the inline fans way louder?

Edit: I guess I meant the inline duct fans, that look like a piece of ducting with a fan inside. Now I realize all the cans are inline as well.

I bought an inline duct fan at HD for less than $30, it says 250cfm, and it's really quiet.

That kind of fan won't drive through carbon scrubber though DieselB.

I've never tried one first hand but the S&P's are supposed to be the best stealth fan available that will still push air through a scrubber.

If you still want to try a regular inline like a vortex, have a look at my speed controller FAQs in my sig. I've got mine dialed back to a very low, moving air, noise easily covered up with a box fan or air conditioner in the room. Good luck!

You're absolutely right, I didn't re-read the first post before I put that up.. I was just saying it was good for quiet. I use it for cooling my reflector and it works great.

S&P fans are genius.  A 5" one of those and a duct adapter should do it.
