Nutrients too Concentrated?
    #371286 - 02/23/10 12:02 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

First time grower using Garden Safe organic potting mix which has a rating(?) of .06nitrogen .09phosphate and .06potassium. My plants have reddish-brown discolorations on their leaves and a sort of yellowing that started on the lower leaves and has worked upwards.

They're fairly young plants and after I noticed the problem I read on the bag that it recommends misting young sprouts, not actually pouring water into the soil which I'd been doing.

Would this be a result of the way I was watering them or something with the soil itself? Could they improve if I switch to misting....replace the soil? Wtf kinda soil kills plants when it gets wet?

Yellowing from the bottom up is a sign of nitrogen deficiency.  From the sounds of it I would be your dealing with not enough nutrients as opposed to a toxicity.

How old exactly are you plants??  How big??  Lighting??

No soil kills plants when it's wet.  I never just mist plants instead of water, that's counter intuitive.

How often are you watering? That maybe caused by hot spots created by that foil.

I was lightly watering once a day. maybe a lil more......but yeah the leaves are all dried out so hot spots could be the issue. I took the foil off recently so maybe they'll turn around.....and maybe if I turn down the water.

i would trim that plant up...they recover very quickly when shitty spots are removed.

how deep are the roots planted in the cup?

i think a new pot, possibly checking the pH, and a fresh start would fix that plant fairly quickly its nothing serious at this point i don't think

do you see any type of possible mold or infestation of some sorts?

I was planning to transfer them to pots soon. Someone on grasscity suggested mold could be the issue which I think is possible considering I took no precautions to sterilize the area and there are alot of materials, particle board and cardboard, which could carry spores.

I honestly never considered the possibility of mold and I'm not sure what to look for. I know its a bitch for mushies but never thought herb would be susceptible.

I have noticed a sort of white frost looking condition on the top of the soil but I just thought it was something with the particular mix im using when it gets wet.

Ive been sanitizing the grow box and treated the soil with a lil proxide just in case but im not sure what else to do. Grasscity guy suggested using safers soap, not sure what that is or how it applies to mold if its supposed to be for insects.

Definitely not a nitrogen deficiency, the white frost MAY be powdery mildew, but I don't think an infection as light as you make it seem would do that to your plants.

Do you have a fan constantly blowing on your plants that's not oscillating?

Up until now I was just fanning them periodically throughout the day but now I've got air circulating 24/7.

I trimmed off all the raunchy looking leaves and transfered them into actual pots, which they definitely needed! That frostlike stuff started getting yellowish brown I brushed that layer off when transfering.

They seem to be doing a lot better. It's only been a few days though so I'm not busting out the champagne yet.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice, I appreciate you sharing your time and knowledge.

Yeah maybe I should have chose a different title for this thread....I just noticed something wrong and checked out the infirmary section of the main site and the closest thing that resembled what I was seeing was the nutrient stuff. I'm thinking it was probably just lack of good air flow and the roots out growing those cups.:facepalm3:

"Pouring water into the soil, which I had been doing". "Powdery mildew". "lightly watering once a day maybe more". These are things I heard before you transplanted. You over watered your seedling and water logged your roots. The yellowing was coming from your roots drowning and the "white frost looking condition" was the begining of powdery mildew, as Coda pointed out. Good eye sir. Due to the high levels of moisture. You inadvertently fixed both problems when you transplanted. Nice work. Be sure your containers have proper drainage holes at the bottom and it never hurts to raise you containers off the ground, a few inches if you can, to provide good airflow to the bottom of your containers. This will help dissipate moisture more rapidly. Here is a couple of links with some useful information for your situation.
