Whats the main idea here? Im sure they don't add flavor. Are they just trying to get people addicted to bagels with trace amounts of morphine?

I think it has something to do with baking, I don't know 100% though. I am not sure if seeds even have traceable amounts of morphine, now if they were putting pods in food, that would be a different story.

Ive read, but havent tested it myself they can cause a false positive. But i said trace amount being slim to none. I dont see why people add stuff to food other than for the flavor? Maybe its for texture.

i've nodded on my mum's poppy seed stroodle many times. back at home in europe it's a traditional thing to eat foods jam packed with poppies. i think we're discretely addicted to morph that way @_@ seriously.

a small amount has a nice taste and adds crunch to baked goods, I used to eat poppy seed muffins all the time.

Every time I eat a bagel its a great day.
Not really, but I was thinking that could be one of the reasons they started to add them, to addict people to their food. Without them subconsciously knowing.

I think it's to get you slightly high honestly.
Imagine back in the day when they would have used fresh seeds in their baked goods...
Probably staight from the pod on the bagle or muffin or w/e....

The spice is formed long after the capsule has lost its potential to produce opium so it is not considered narcotic.
Poppy seeds offer a nutty crunch no matter where they appear. To really bring out the flavor they should be roasted or crushed prior to using. Which is how 99% of the poppy seeds you eat (unless you put them in yourself) have been prepared. So the tiny amount of active alkaloids they contain are destroyed upon roasting.
Dutch poppy seeds are considered the finest in flavor and quality but they are produced in other parts of Europe as well as in Australia. India markets white poppy seeds which are unripened and slightly more bitter than the blue variety.
Your not going to feel anything off them, if you were to make tea out of poppy seeds you'd need at least a 1/4 pound to feel anything at all, some people say it takes them 1/2-3/4 of a pound. If they got you high in the amounts most places cook with, they'd be illegal

MythBusters did a segment about them, and sure enough you can fail a test because of poppy seeds. Jamie ate like 6 bagels, which is a lot but not unrealistic, and failed.
Or, at least he said it was because of the bagels...

Yeah, I think the issue there is that the seeds contain non-actives that your body digests into the metabolite they test for opiate use. I'm not 100% on that though.

You don't know what your talking about.
I drink PST every day for back pain. I KNOW first hand just how potent the seeds can be. If you call the company that sells the seeds and ask where they come from. I bet they will more than likely say Australia. The ones that I get are from a bulk food store for under 7$ for 1-1/2 lbs I called around one day to all the bulk food stores in my area, asked for the brand name of the seeds being sold, looked up the company's 1-800 # and found out guess what? All the seeds were Papaver Somniferum and came from Ausi 
I'm not going to share my knowledge on how I make my make the tea because you guys are talking like your 14 or something and just spreading the misinformation all the fuck around. I'm not going to have a kids death on my conscience. Not that its a bad thing to spread the myth that poppy seeds don't contain active alkaloids because dosing PST can be dangerous.

You guys are spreading misinformation. Most poppy seeds you buy in bulk 90+% are harvested from poppy pods after they have been lanced for there active alkaloids for use in the pharmaceutical industry.
Think about this for a second here people. What makes more money? Growing poppy seeds and selling them for 6$ a LB or growing poppy's for the alkaloids and then selling the seeds in bulk as a after thought?
I HATE MISINFORMATION!!! 
PS, I have NEVER purchased a brand of poppy seeds that had less than 90% germination. How do you explain that? If they were cooked at a high enough temp to destroy all but a minuscule amount of actives alkaloids then don't you think the seed would be unable to germinate?
