I wish I was growing poppies, it would probably be a very bad idea in the end though.

Are you growing them indoors or outdoors? You should start a log in the Other Growables forum.

Forgive my ignorance but what can you use poppy seeds for? Is it easy to make your own opiates?

well i think im going to try doing some inside and out and a number of different ways to see what they like ,i know they can be picky ! and as for a log that sounds like an idea ,i think ill get one started now that you mention it !
and smurfmaster you can grow out the poppies and they do produce opium ,but the seed contains no active alkaloids

The seed is actually supposed to contain about 58.4 to 62.2 µg/g. And The Journal of Forensic Science reports that concentration of morphine in some batches of seeds may be as high as 251 µg/g. They also contain small traces of codiene.
The sale of poppy seeds from Papaver somniferum is banned in Singapore because of the morphine content. Poppy seeds are also banned in Saudi Arabia for various religious and drug control reasons. In United Arab Emirates, a few poppy seeds found on a traveller's clothes will very likely lead to imprisonment. Taken fromWiki.
This is also why u can drug test a false positive for opiates by just eating a poppy seed bagel.
So anyways, just wanted to throw some knowledge up in this thread. I also have started a poppy garden and have had some shitty luck. Some critter keeps eating all my seedling and small plants. I have some other poppies of the ornimental variety that are doing quite well. But these soms seem to be a delicacy for something here and am not sure if I am gonna get anything out of it.

I am not really sure. But I think the bulbs are the difference. Unless these seeds I have are not soms? I have seen pics of soms and the bulbs look bald compared to ornimentals. I got mine from a friend who I guess bought poppy pods and took the seeds out?
But I can see in my own garden this packet of ornamentals I picked up from wally world had to be a mix. They have 2 distict leaf patterns. This is the first time I have grown poppy. Figured I would add some color to the yard and benefit in the end win some goooooo!

Even if you dont harvest a substantial amount of goo, you are still left with the pods that you can dry out and use. I have never had the luxury of growing my own and harvesting my own opium but ive had lots of experience with dried pods and they are win.
