can't say i know the difference in effectivness of either style reflector but the parabolic shape will likely have a certain distance where it has an intense spot. that might not be good but I can't say it even does without seeing it.
the cool tube is used by lots of people here and is a favorite for it's price. it was mentioned in another thread that you will want the extra wide reflector because the standard one lets a lot of light go sideways and up instead of all going down. they are really simple though and I bet you could build a great reflector with some metal flashing.
The CoolTube also comes with a digital ballast which is supposed to be the thing to have.

also id like to maybe get a smaller mh set up that i can just move around. what would be the best way to do that, could i just buy the bulb and rotate it with the hps during light cycle?

hmm i may just stick with the cool tube then, being its about $30 cheaper as well. And i was wondering about that reflector, it only looks like it sticks out 2 inches hah

I checked the ballast that comes with the CoolTube is MH compatable. So you could use it for either bulb.

depending on the size of your grow space, it would be easier to control temps with a vented reflector.

yes, a vented hood is a reflector which has ports for ducting that has a fan moving air through the reflector and out of the grow room. The other type of hood is open so it's not a good choice for small enclosed areas (at least for a 400 watt light).
