Duct Insulation, Upgrade?
    #352942 - 01/25/10 10:49 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

Hey there,

was wondering if duct insulation is worth the money. (Found 15ft self-adhesive insulation for $18.99). Currently, during the day, my temps can reach up to 88F.

Simple questions... does it do what it says it does?
AND is it worth buying?

I am using a 440cfm inline fan to cool 2x400w HPS lights.

P.S. as for the heat issue, this is what I resorted to after having A/C intake, multiple exhausts & oscillating fans. (believe me, I am trying here)

Thank you for time

Ok....

so I've been having my temps recently climbing up to around 86-87 and staying there during my lights on cycle as well. I bought a fan with 3x the air flow and only dropped about a degree, I reworked my ducting to reduce the number of angles and expanded from 4" to 6" ducting and only lost about another degree. so today I took some 1/2" foil backed insulation foam-board (this stuff) and made myself a reflector heat shield out of it.

.......

viola! temps are at 77 right now and haven't climbed in 3 hours! so I can't speak for the insulated ducting, but it seems to me that the radiant heat from the reflectors/ducting must contribute a significant amount to the high temps in our closets.

Harry, can you please post what you did with those boards?  I'd love to drop my cab down to 75 degrees too lol.  I do need to buy a 6 inch fan, but what I was worried would happen is the drop in temp would be minimal (like you experienced).  I'll definitely need to run an AC during the summer, but if you're able to drop your cab temps by 10 degrees by using this material, I'd love to learn how to as well (sick of airy fucking buds)

thanks man!

here ya go! honestly about as simple as it can really get. from the direct side profile you can't even really tell I did anything, but I took one offset a bit so you could see how easy this really is to make. when it's later in flowering and I'm running both lights I'm also going to make a little end piece to cover the side with the vent holes. that might be a bit more complicated though...

Thanks for the input, Harry.

Since it seems that many do not have experience with this material, I will be the guinea pig and purchase the duct insulation and see what effect it has.

I will try using that foam board to insulate my Sun System 2 (lots of heat), but I fear that my cool tube won't get much use out of it.

Will post temps tomorrow after installation.

Yah, I have a cool tube as well unfortunately.  But if the material is not expensive I'd buy a sheet to experiment with.

nah man, it's only like $3 for an 8x4 sheet. you can get it in thicknesses up to 1.5" though, mine seems to be working perfectly well but I can't help but wonder.....

Well, if it's that cheap it's worth a shot heh.  Once that tax return comes in that 400 cfm fan is mine

I just got the duct insulation. Purchased two packs of 5'x6" sleeves that cost $5.99/each @ Home Depot.

I read the back and saw that the fiberglass is inevitably going to get inside my lungs and kill me.... Any advice? It recommends using a dust respirator!

That doesn't sound like a good thing to have hanging over sticky plants you intend to smoke.

Got it installed and it has reduced temps in the grow tent by 3-5 degrees. This was the first day, so more data will be recorded as the days go by.

SO far... well worth the $6. I wore a dust mask, thick gloves and safety goggles. Had no issues with the fiberglass, not one itch.

The packaging really over-sells it.

I've been wanting to try this duct insulation too, but I cannot find it at my store.  They have some insulated duct but it is more expensive.  I just want to buy the insulation to run the ducting through.  Is that what you did NightGrower?  Or did it wrap around somehow?

It comes as a tube that can be slipped on like a sock on new ducting or you have to tape down the insulation to the mylar and cut it in half to wrap around existing ducting.

In the future, if you are setting up a grow space, I would say it is fairly easy to accomplish, the pain in the arse was getting into a tight space and putting it on an existing duct.

You can find it in the same area as all other ducting in HD. The product is called "Duct Sleeves".

Good luck.

Thanks.  Yea I am looking to do it on existing ducting.  Will give another look for it soon.  Looks like it is well worth it.
