How to tell if your bulb went or if you need a whole new system. When light is on just dont turn over you know right before it turns fully on its a light orange, then when it kicks on the light turns brighter well that is all my light is doing. So I am wondering if its the light or the system.

Take bulb to a hydro store and ck it in another system.
Hope a grow is not suffering.

That was my plan if nobody had an answer for me, on the bright side of things its only been out for about 4 hours so if it is only the bulb I can get another not to big of deal just dont want it to happen again. For all you people growing make sure you have a spare bulb for cases just like this. I will update when I get back from the store until then crossing my fingers its only the bulb.

sounds like a problem with the ballast if its not kicking in fully

So I went to the shop and that fucker doesnt even have the shop open, and the store hours posted on the door 12-8 mon-sat, what the fuck!!! Well I'm a hook up a couple cfls until that old fuck opens his store. This hsit sucks horribly!

Nah it was the light and that guy wanted 50 for one 400 watt hps bulb, but did not have any in so I called this electric store, the guy had them there for 20 bucks so I got two of them. Another bit of advice for some of you that may not now your bulbs decrease lumen output steadily after each use, also clean regularly with alcohol. Hope this helps a few of you guys that may not know much about bulbs.

Removes any dust or finger prints from your bulbs. It doesn't increase lumens the lumens of the bulb, just gives you back what you may have lost from a grimy reflector/bulb.
Funny that it was the bulb that burned out, usually the symptom you described is due to a blown capacitor or something along those lines. Since there isn't a high enough charge to fire the bulb it stays in the purple glowy stage permanently.

Yeah there was a big difference between the old one I had, and this one I got right now for sure. Even puts off more heat but I am just glad that I got it the same day it went out so I didn't fuck the light schedule up that bad, plus I got a back up bulb just in case of situations like this.

Are you sure the bulb you bought was designed for growing?? There are HPS bulbs that are sold but aren't designed for growing plants. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Is there a big difference hawksapprentice? I have a NatureMax HPS which is supposed to be the same specs and design as the Hortilux Supers and it cost me $90, but I have often wondered about how good the $20 joints at the hardware store would do.

I believe that they do not put out the spectrum that you are looking for. I would have to see the exact bulb that he bought though.
Stick with the ones your using.

I figured it was probably a spectrum thing, not to mention they may not have the lumen output of the grow bulbs. I was just curious if they would make good interim back ups in the event my bulb dies out. I guess they probably would for the money.

The box it came in said Athalon commercial lighting products. Looked it up, looks like the right light for me.

From what I see on there web site they don't make grow lights. I would be surprised if this had the appropriate spectrum that you need for growing plants. Commercial light and grow lighting are 2 completely different types of HPS bulb.
But maybe I'm wrong on this one and were all getting ripped off at the grow store. Anyone else wanna chime in on this??

This is not BlueBerry D, this is Linux. We share an apartment and a computer and I just read this and must respond now.
Sorry but you have no idea what you are talking about man. It may not be the perfect spect but its still putting out around the same if not the same amount of lumems.
I have seen many grows over the years I have been reading grow logs with people using straight up fucking stolen street lights.
It bugs me so much when people take the time and effort to talk about this they know nothing about.
