T5s?
    #337892 - 12/29/09 03:38 PM (14 years, 10 months ago)

OK, so I already have a 150w sunsystem HPS.

Today I dropped $148 on a 2', 4 bulb T5 light that I was going to use for vegging my next crop.

1.) Did I get screwed?
2.) Do I even need T5?
3.) Do T5's work well?

With questions like those, seems like a compulsive purchase.

T5's are good for vegging, I have had my eye on a 2' T5 setup, seeing as how it looks like the most efficient dimensions.

The better question is, do you have a use for it? Got some plants that need vegging? Got a space already laid out for it? Just need to clip it up, perhaps?

Well I didn't realize until coming back from the store that HPS could be used for veg and flowering. I also read a couple threads in which people talked them down a bit.

As I said I already have a 150w HPS. My grow area is 17"x24".

I thought I needed a light for veg but I'm not sure that a T5 setup is worth so much money. I assumed I could get a MH for around $100, but this store  only sold the kind of ballast that supports MH and HPS so they ran for around $220 for just 200w.

Ugh I didn't realize this was all so expensive!

T5's are great for vegging and clones and mommas too!  Sounds about right on the price for a system like that so don't feel hosed.

you didn't get ripped off.  Won't find a T-5 setup like that for much cheaper.

I would use the T-5 over your HPS system for vegging.  Your plants will prefer it too.  Although you could run both at the same time.  When I flower I mix both MH and HPS, it works well.

Phew! Thanks guys. I found one online for $118 but I'd rather pay cash at a store so I'm glad to hear that it's a decent price for a good product.

What would you expect a similar MH to cost?

I got a HO T5,4ft with 8 bulbs. $300 including shipping. The only thing I didn't like about it is the heat it puts out. I keep mothers and clones under it. Need to run a fan and a/c most of the time.

Been thinking about building a hood of some kind to vent the heat. If I would of know about the heat would of gone with a T5 or T8.

You live and learn. Now I ask about products around here before buying.

I JUST bought a 4 bulb HO T5 setup by hydrofarm today. It cost me 160. I too purchased it at a local store. I can't wait to see how my seedlings like the xtra lumens.  I  had them under 2 - 32 watt t8's before. Let me know how it works out for you.

We have the exact same light Farmer Joe. I hope it works well for both of us :greenthumb:

Hey willis,

You having any heat issues with ur t5's??  Some of my plants got slightly burned on the first day we hung the light. I didn't have a chance to check on the plants until today...and I noticed that my buddy raised the light roughly 5-6 inches above the canopy and at 6 inches the temp at the canopy is 85 f.  I assume a fan blowing on the bulbs should help...don't have one small enough at the moment.  I am curious as to how things are going for you...since we have identical setups.

Anyone else have input?

Sorry, I don't know yet.
I'm on the last week of flowering under my 150w HPS.

I'm starting either sour diesel seeds or church cuttings (under the t5) at the end of January.

Yah, you need to be a little careful with your growing tips.  If i let mine grow up against the lamp it crisps up real quick.  I have to constantly prune back my mom to keep the canopy below the lamp.  With a good fan blowing over your canopy you can keep your tips 2-3 inches from the lamps.

No worries willis. Thanks for getting back to me.

Thanks coda. I will invest in a fan and slam the light down 3 inches and see how it goes. I know I have to do something...they are really starting to stretch.

On a good note I can't believe the difference betweet t8's and t5's. The plants are pushing out new growth so quickly.  They are on their 5th or 6th node...so I will be topping/lsting within a few days. I can't wait!

Keep in mind if you can keep the air around the lamps cool enough you can let them touch the bulb.  The air in my veg cab varies depending on ambient temps, the little fan I have is not enough to keep them from getting crisped.

Are you able to hold your hand on the bulbs without any pain?

I haven't touched the bulbs yet...but I will. I have held my hand within a 1/2 inch to an inch below the bulbs and felt no discomfort. That was where I first placed the plants which resulted in the sundurn they received. I won't be checking on everything until this weekend, but I will mount the fan and see how it goes.

The ambient temp does fluctuate frequently though. My friend runs a wood stove so the temp outside the grow room will vary depending on how he adjusts the vents to heat the rest of his house. Do you suspect this will be an issue?

                                                                                                            Thanks for the feedback coda

Nah, as long as the grow room isn't baking constantly you'll be ok. Cannabis is pretty hardy and can take high temps, but you want to do your best to keep them comfortable.

BTW, even if the bulbs are cool to the touch, it's best not to let them grow into the bulbs.

My T5's were ok forr seedlings and slow veg growth. I got a 4 bulb, 2ft 100w setup and it is useless for anything other than adding to other lights IMO. Even with an additional 50w HPS it wasn't enough for buds to form past the initial pistols poppin out of the sack...2 months later with no development I trashed em and got a 400w, so I hope for better results this time.
