I'm thinking of doing it. Like 5000 watts of T5/CFL over HID lights.

It is. More will spent on elect with less light penetration than a hps.

Yea, CFLs though great, put off more heat per watt than HIDs. I grew some great bud with CFLs only, before I graduated to HPS.

No, not if they know what they are doing,

Ok, so lets clear this up!
Unless you have a mega garden in your attic or on an outside wall, Flir will not find you! Most of us use a closet area, and most the closets are in the middle of your house. So you have all the air between your closet and the roof/walls to hide your single hot spot! Flir is not x-ray, it does not look into your house. It simply sees the temp differences from home to home, or conventionally used to find body heat signatures of fleeing suspects!
Understand how these things work before freaking out in 100 different threads! Flir

My buddies box is going to use CFL but only 4 bulbs for a few plants.
Really if your worried about drawing suspicion (from your other posts this seems to be the concern) go buy commercial lights from a supply house, don't go to lowes and buy every 23w cool white CFL they have on the shelf that will really look odd even if they don't think anything of it.
also 5000/23 = ~217 so add $434US JUST for the sockets to screw them into. i seriously doubt you couldn't beat that and get longer bulb life out of a professional system designed for large indoor ops.
