How good does a carbon filter really work??
    #329989 - 12/11/09 07:53 PM (15 years, 22 days ago)

Hi all I was wondering if someone could answer this for me I live in a duplex. I also have very close neighbors. I was looking to do a grow maybe just one 400 w hps. and was wondering is a carbon filter really work that good? even if the air is going out the side of my house where people (neighbors) will be walking by? My grow room would be ether a 2x8 closet or this grow tent http://cgi.ebay.com/COMPLETE-GROW-KIT-WITH-TENT-GROW-LIGHT-FEED_W0QQitemZ380180120645QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_HomeGarden_Garden_PlantsSeedsBulbs_JN?hash=item5884804445

. If a carbon filter wouldn't be enough what else could I use along with it to completely eliminate the smell. Thanks for the help.

You will be fine with a carbon filter. Make sure there is no light leaks, because the smell will also leak through those spots. But other than that you should be fine.

the key word to cfm is cubic.

you need to give a cubic dimension of your room

if you estimate he has an 8 foot ceiling that would be 128 cf.  wouldn't need a big one for that space at all.  are you worried about the noise of the fan at all?  I've never used one (should have!) so idk how noisy they are.

you can get an attachment to hook up that turns the fan on/off or speeds it up/slows down to keep the room at a set temperaure. its probably a 40-50 dollar device but its helpful.

no, they range from 15-25 bucks for a variable speed control.

In which case I would recommend a 256 cfm fan to exchange the air twice a minute.

Well, shit, sunlight supplies site is down other wise I'd link you right to them.  They have two variable speed controllers, and one temperature based fan controller.  The temp based one is almost 70 bucks and has no variable control though.

EDIT
http://www.rvfgardensupply.com/cgi/display.cgi?item_num=736617

RVF has one for 30 bucks, plus I think they're running a storewide 10% off sale which can be combined with the DEAL coupon for another 10%.  So that would make it around 24 bucks before shipping and/or tax

Thanks for all the input guys. I am worried about noise. Would the 150 cfm do the job and this carbon filter? http://www.growery.org/3045/How-To-Build-a-Carbon-Scrubber

Would a muffler for the exhaust made out of a 5 gallon bucket quit that enough and is the inline fan itself going to be load in my grow room. Is it safe to wrap them in insulation to keep it quit? Here is the homemade muffler tek I would use http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=42646

I think I will grab one of those adjusters. It would probably save on electric not being full blast and keep the fan as quit as possible.

I would say no since a carbon filter would reduce the CFM and 150 cfm would be barely enough to change the air in your cab once a minute.
