I need an idea of how noisy inline fans are... Help!

So I would really like to start a grow, but smell would be an issue, so I need to get a fan and carbon scrubber. Now, if these fans are too noisy, this whole thing will be ruined. I dont want to order an expensive fan only to find out when it gets here that it is too noisy to use. The fan will be inside a grow cab, thats inside a large closet. Will this setup be heard only in the room of the closet? If you guys can point me to any sound clips, I would really appreciate it. I honestly have no idea of the noise these things produce.

quiet fans that push lots of air are very pricey
just go for lots of cheap quiet fans

It's going to depend on a few factors, major ones being the size of your cab and the sort of heat you'll be dealing with. For instance, my cab is <100 cubic feet, suggesting that I might not need a very powerful fan. However, I'm running a 600W HID in 2/3 of the cab, so it gets hotter in there than if it were a bigger room, so I need a more powerful fan, which is noisier. Taking this into account, I got the 6" Vortex fan, which moves 447 CFM and costs almost $200 shipped.
As far as powerful fans go, it's quiet, but as far as average house noises go (fridge, computer, etc.) it's fucking retarded. Like a jet engine. However, most of that noise is caused by air rushing through the ducting; the fan itself is nearly silent, and causes little vibration mounted to my cab. Here is how I'm going about dampening the noise, since my cab is not in a closet in another room, but in my living room:
-Pushing through my scrubber instead of pulling through it. Scrubber acts as a semi-muffler, so it's not just a big roaring sound coming out of empty ducting. -Building a "muffler box" around scrubber. Do some reading on "duct mufflers." I'm doing a variation on this idea, simply due to space restrictions, but a traditional duct muffler may suit your needs better. Mine's basically a box lined with fiberglass insulation, built around the scrubber to dampen vibrations caused by the air. -Replacing all my ducting with insulated ducting. The ducting itself will no longer vibrate and cause noise.
If that isn't enough, I'll also:
-Wrap the fan itself in insulation. Dampens whatever noise fan itself is contributing. -If necessary, suspend the fan from the ceiling of cab from bungee cords, so vibrations can't travel through metal to wood of cab. This sometimes helps a lot with cheaper fans, but I notice little fan vibration with the vortex.
So there's a lot you can do to make your fan quieter. Some people hook them up to a speed controller, though this isn't an option for me.
I think your cab could be quiet enough to not be heard even in the room outside the closet, if the closet door's shut. A room around your grow room, with some dead air in between, does wonders for noise control. A duct muffler may be the best first step in quieting up your fan if it ends up being too noisy, though.
Tell us more about your cab specs.

Hmm. Well the cab would probably be around 4x3x2 feet. I think I'd put two or three plants in there. Could you compare the fan to anything so I can get an idea as to what kind of noise it makes?

Stanley Blowers are extremely quiet compared to most inline fans, the performance is comparable, they have two grounded outlets that are damn handy, and they cost thirty measly bucks.
It is more than capable of exhausting the cab you describe + cooling a 600w HPS.

Take a jet engine devide into 2 then multiply that by .5 add noisey car brakes and then again devide by 2.

The more expensive the fan (usually) the quieter it will run. Squirrel cage fans are pretty loud.
