People keep bonsai moms and mother plants for literally years at a time. Shantibaba of Mr. Nice Seeds recommends taking clones outside for the first couple weeks of their lives before putting them indoors especially if they are to be used for breeding/parent plants.

I seem to remember OT1 saying that his oldest bonsai mom was close to ten years old. I believe expecting a mom to live for two or three years wouldn't be unreasonable. It might be smart to take clones and grow out new moms every once in a while, though.
