 First grow log: Clones from bagseed in homemade Ebb and Flow

This is my first grow log and first hydro grow. I am growing two Ice and two Bubblegum seeds from www.marijuana-seeds.nl. ; They are gonna be living in a homemade Ebb and Flow. I made one small modification to the system and that is add an air pump and stone by running the air line through the overfill port. I'm still waiting on my light to come in: 400w Lumatek ballast with a Sun System air cooled hood and a Phillips Son Agro 430w HPS bulb. Until the light comes in I am using 220w of mixed CFL's. For fertilizers I have a Botanicare Triflex sample pack with Liquid Karma that I got for free. I will probably use Technaflora once this is gone. Only thing else I really need is a TDS/ppm meter and a tent.

Not much is going on yet. I germinated the seeds on the 9th and 3 have fully sprouted and the last one is poking out.
  
And here is my second flush of Penis Envy starting to come up.
Edited 1/30 to change title from Ice and Bubblegum. They were all males and now I have clones that came from bagseed.

I have a an ebb and flow set up but I need a reservoir cooler before starting. One of the problems of living in the sub tropics.

The mushrooms were WBS spawned to coir, coffee, and verm and then cased with a light layer of verm. I have been using this in smaller casings for years with great results. First time using a monotub and I happy with the results so far. 2 1/2 oz from the first flush.
The last plant is out now. Not going to bother with a pic since it looks about the same as yesterday. The first two that popped up are already starting to show there second set of leaves.
On a bad note, the ballast that I ordered came in damaged and very used looking. The owner the shop I got it from was a complete ass saying it's impossible for that to happen. After some arguments he is going to swap it out for a new one. Now I have to wait about two more weeks to get my HPS up and running.

Here is an updated shot from today. Still nothing too exciting. One of my ICE plants seems to have stretched a little and is a bit top heavy. Should I support it up with a toothpick or something until it gets stronger?

you said your using CFLS until your light comes in? if thats true move them way closer two your babies..... like an inch or two away

Yup currently using CFL's. I swapped out a few of my 2700k lights for 6500k lights yesterday. I have 4 27w and 1 65w at 6500k and 2 42w 2700k CFL's now. They are about 2" under the light's now. I have the lights hanging from yo-yo's now and move it up to take pictures.

I was going to say the exact same thing about the CFL's being closer until I read his post about moving them for the pictures, and you remember the pics in another thread where the buds were being dried on a dehydrator tray and we were like: "whoa, don't use a dehydrator!"?

Day 9
These plants are growing very quick. It looks like they might be getting nute burn slightly. I just got my TDS tester in and the ppm is reading at 470. PH all I have is drops and it is somewhere between 5.5 and 6.0. It's hard to match up the colors unless you have a good white light to use. All comments and suggestions are welcome.

I think the nute burn I thought I had is actually a deficiency, not sure from what. I changed the reservoir out for the first time last night. I added Botanicare Triflex Base, Grow, Liquid Karma and Sweet at half strength. PPM is at 700 and the PH is between 5.5 and 6. I also increased the floods to every 3 hours instead of every 6.

15 Days old. They have really started to take off now that I have the nutes figured out. My ballast should be here this week and then I can put the 400w HPS on them. I'm probably going to start flowering by next weekend depending on how fast they grow.

Quick update. Two showed male preflowers and were pulled. I still have one Ice and one Bubblegum left. It looks like there are female preflowers starting to show up but I can't tell for sure yet and to small for a picture. I'll probably switch to 12/12 on Wednesday when I change out the reservoir. Here is a few pics from today.

Update time. Not to much going on with the plants, they are getting noticeably bigger every day. I switched the lights to 12/12 Wednesday at midnight. No definite signs of sex yet. I still see what looks like female preflowers forming, but can't tell for sure yet.
My ballast finally came in yesterday so I scrapped the CFL's and finally have my HPS up now. I also picked up a tent on Friday. Should have planned a little better though, the tent has holes for 4" ducting and my reflector is for 6". I still need to get an in line fan and will probably need a filter too pretty soon.

I'm not sure if the tent manufacturers have options for vent sizes or not, but most reflectors now seem to have 6" vents. I'd say its time for the tent makers to catch up.

Some of the bigger tent's have the 6" openings. The tent I got is the Secret Jardin Dark Room 80. It's 32"x32"x63", that barely fit where I wanted it in my closet.

My other Ice plant showed some balls today so I pulled it. That's 3/4 males so far, not looking so good. Next grow I am either doing clones or feminized seeds.

My last plant turned out to be a male. I was kinda disappointed and deleted the pics. I picked up some clones 3 weeks ago and have them in there now. They have been flowering for a week now. I have been taking pics every few days and plan to upload some later on today.

Here is a pic of the bubblegum male right before I chopped him down. He got to a decent size and would have had a decent yield had it been a female. Oh well... My new grow is going great.

Here is my current grow. I have 5 clones and one from seed. The clones were originally from a lone seed found in a QP of what was called purple nurple. Who knows what it really is, but it is very tasty with a nice heady, almost trippy buzz. The one from seed is also bag seed, but I don't remember what from.
I did 15 days veg on the clones and the seedling was up for less then a week before I flipped the lights. I might have let them get a little too big for this table. I have a 4 gallon reservoir and they are already drinking a gallon a day, could be a problem later on.
Now for some pics:
The first one is the day I got the clones and the last pic is from this morning before the lights came on, day 9 of flowering. All the others are in between somewhere, I didn't keep track of dates.

Looking truly beautiful. I love the uniqueness of the leaf structure. They definitely have some special characteristics to them. I bet it'll be some bomb diggity dank.
I'm anxious to see how the seed plant yields being flowered with nearly no veg!

Things are coming along nicely with the hydro. My two potted plants seem to have a nitrogen deficiency and are little over watered, but otherwise coming right along.

Four in the ebb and flow and two in soil. After watching the difference in the two, I don't think I wanna use dirt again. The growth difference is crazy.

Yeah but you started from seed in the soil grow right? You cant really compare a clone with anything from seed, they have a completely different growth pattern and tendencies as compared to a seed-sown plant.

One seed was in soil. I had 5 clones, 1 went in dirt, the other 4, hydro. I have been feeding the plants in dirt very little. I fried my last plants and have been hesitant to feed them much this time.

You have to find your sweet spot. I feed until the very tip of the leaf begins to yellow/burn. I find that to be the best I can do, w/out burning

I have been slowly increasing the ppms each week. I just switched to FloraNova nutes last week and aimed low instead of high. Didn't want to fuck something up changing things around.

I have no complaints other then my house is starting to smell like marijuana potpourri. I need to get a carbon filter before the smell gets out of hand. I raised the ppm to 1100 on Friday when I changed the reservoir and the plants seem to be happy. The plant that I started from seed showed it's sex last week sometime and it's a female!! I took a few pics right before and after the lights cut on.

Flowering Day 30:
Everything is coming along just fine, except the plants are way too big for this ebb and flow I made. They are now getting top heavy and falling over when the table floods. I think I have kinda fixed this by adding hooks and weights to keep the pots in place. The reservoir is starting to become a pain in the ass to change too with them getting so big. On a plus note it looks like I'm going to get a bigger harvest then I had planned.
The only other problem I am having is the pH seems to be rising a lot. When I mix my nutes (FloraNova Bloom and liquid KoolBloom) the pH is perfect at 5.8 mixing with tap water. The next day it rises to over 6.5. I have to lower it almost every day. I know it goes up as the plants use the nutes, but the ppm maybe goes down by 100 - 150 at the most. Not sure if it's normal or me just worrying, but that seems like a big jump. The plants seem to be very healthy and growing quickly.

I need to change the title. My Ice and Bubblegum plants all turned out male. If you look up the thread I have a pic of my last Bubblegum plant right before it got the chop if that will help at all. I delete all my pics on my camera after I upload the ones I want, so unfortunately I don't have any of the pics anymore.
Instead of starting new seeds, I picked up clones so I could grow some female plants. The clones were from a bag seed plant that came from some very good bud. I would really like to try those two strains again, but the more I look at seed banks, I can't figure out what I wanna do next. I got the free skunk crosses from Attitude which I will prob give a shot, but I'd really like to try some of Magash's strains when they become available.

Those buds are going to be pretty large my friend. Way ahead of mine at day 30, but mine were from seed and not sexually mature when flowered.

Thanks man! Big buds is what I'm hoping for. I was originally hoping for about an OZ per plant, but I think each plant already has an oz or very close to it. My plant from seed barely has any buds yet, but it just started to show flowers about a week ago. I have been watching your grow and they look fairly close. We should be harvesting about the same time too.

We should be harvesting around the same time, but my plants werent sexually mature when going into 12/12 so they took a little longer to pack on flowers. Hydro is the way to go, but I love my soil!

I can be pretty handy with the DIY stuff. It's fun to make stuff like this and it makes the end product that much more rewarding.
I have had nothing but problems my last few soil grows, but I have also used Miracle Grow because that's what I had around. The two in dirt now are in MG Cactus soil with added vermiculite and perlite. I read somewhere that was the better of the MG brands and I had a few extra bags of it from re potting my cacti. It seems to be working better the the organic crap I tried last time, but still has it's issues. Next time I try dirt, I need to get some Fox Farm soil in order to do a real comparison.
Hydro on the other hand has been a breeze so far. I used to have a bunch of aquariums and it's fairly similar to maintaining them.

Day 37:
Things are still coming along nicely. The buds seem to have started to bulk up nicely since I changed the reservoir on Thursday. Still using FloraNova bloom and liquid KoolBloom. I just ordered some dry KoolBloom and FloraNectar which I will start using next reservoir change.

Flowering day 46:
I took these pictures yesterday and didn't get time to upload them. I added some dry KoolBloom and FloraNectar to my mix last week. I plan on using it again tomorrow when I change the reservoir and then next week start flushing. They are getting pretty close. I'm thinking they will be done in less then 2 weeks. The trichomes seem to be about 70/30, cloudy/clear, with a few amber starting to show up.

Flowering Day 54:
There getting close and very colorful. I turned off the light to get some good pictures to show the color. The HPS makes everything look yellow and orange.
I was planning on starting to flush tomorrow, but not sure I want to start that now or wait a few days. The trichomes look to be about 80/20 cloudy/amber. I don't really see any clear trichs, but it's a little hard to tell. Almost all the hairs have turned orange and receded except for some new growth on the main cola's.

Thank you! I have been very happy with how this grow is turning out. Changing the reservoir has been a bitch with the plants being so big. I have to take them all out and set them around my room while I change the water once a week. They have gotten pretty top heavy and have been falling over.
I was planning on harvesting this weekend, but might let at least 2 go longer. I'll see how they look in a few days.

Thanks man! It came from a very good bag so that helps. I'm looking forward to your Ice plants since mine didn't work out. I want to try that strain again one day.
I got home from work today and noticed my lights didn't come on today. The timer didn't click on for some reason. I checked it out and it works like it supposed to, so not sure what is up with that. The plants missed out on 6 hours of light today.

I have access to the mother plant whenever I want a clone, but I don't have one.
I just changed the reservoir to start flushing. I think one (third pic above) will get chopped tomorrow and the rest will go on longer.

It's kinda tricky to get the lighting right. I have to hold my finger over part of the flash or it's too bright. I usually take about 50 or so pics and a few come out nice.
They have lost some of their purple color and started to turn more yellow. There is amber showing up on almost all the bud leaves, but not as much on the buds.
The preflowers are almost solid amber. Is that any indication of the buds on the inside that you can't see? I would imagine they would turn before the outside layers of buds.

You got it man, I usually see more swollen calyxs and amber trichs on the inner bud surface. I'm pretty positive that is the first material to grow and it just expands outwards. You know what i'm saying I'm just tired and don't feel like elaborating.
Try using an LED flashlight and not using the flash, you will need a tripod or extreme steadiness but the quality will be much clearer consistently.
This was just with flashlight in a dark room.

If I had a tripod I could take pictures like that. Might have to look into picking up a cheap one. I have a LED flashlight, but it's very bright. Works better when the batteries have burn down a little.
That's a pretty good pic. I can even see the amber trichs on it.

Small update:
I harvested some of my plants this past Friday on day 63. The first batch I harvested last Sunday dried out to 23.6 grams and the batch from Friday dried out to 62.5 grams. Just over 3 ounces so far and at least that much left. I'm more then happy.

Final Update
I harvested the rest of my clones on day 71 of flowering. They have been dry for a little while now and curing. I have been fairly busy lately and haven't been able to update.
Total yield for the 4 plants in my small ebb and flow is 232.3 grams dried. The clone that was in dirt only yielded 13.3 grams. I still have the plant from seed going, but it's nothing special and only has a few leave left on it. I think it needs another week or so still.

The hydro bud are a lot bigger then the soil buds. The soil buds have a purple tint to them and have a little more smell and taste. That could all change after a nice long cure though. They are already smelling and tasting better every day.
