Looking to get a light
    #288757 - 09/29/09 10:37 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

I'm starting to get everything together for my next grow and getting rid of the CFL's and stepping up to a HPS.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a good, but not too expensive 400w setup?  I'd like to keep it at around $250 for everything.  Also what is everyone's preference on digital vs magnetic ballasts?  I have been looking all over the web at different lights and the more I see the harder my decision is.  Being stoned isn't helping.

I have looked at that light, but I need something with a separate ballast as heat will be an issue in the summer.  I am growing in my closet and it is not insulated.  Heat has really affected the plants I have now just using CFL's.  Although now with the cooler temps outside and better air circulation, my grow area is staying around 80f with the lights on and dropping to about 70 at night.

I read somewhere recently about certain digital ballast not firing certain bulbs like the Hortilux and that is my main concern.  I don't want to spend money on something that wont work the way I want it to.  Can anyone send me in the right direction to find out more info on that?

Sorry that I can't help much on the "which light is best" front, but I just wanted to make sure you've really considered the heat output of a 400w hps. If your room is 80f with cfls, it's going to be much hotter with the 400. I assume you'll be air-cooling it...do you plan to get a stronger fan than what you have now? Or maybe just exhaust the light in its own closed loop. Just trying to help you cover all your bases.

I do plan on air cooling which is why I wanted one with a separate ballast.  The heat will actually help in the winter since it probably gets to around 40f - 50f in there.  I was initially going to get a 250w, but plan on doing a little bigger grow in the future and don't want to have to buy a light again.  With a switchable 400w, I can use it as a veg light in the future and get a 600w for flowering.  That will be after I buy a new house though.

Here is 1 that I was looking at:

Also this one, but I would rather have an air cooled reflector which I could buy and still be cheaper then the one above.  Plus it come with all the extras.  Not sure about the quality of the ballast though.

How big is your grow area?

If you have ample air circulation, heat won't really be a problem.

Are you using any fans? If so, what's the cfm?

Right now I'm just using a section of my closet, about a 3'x3'x7' area.  In the future I plan on using a full closet or a couple tents.  Depends on the next house I buy.

I have not bought any fans for a light yet since I haven't figured out what I'm getting yet.  Currently I have a small fan blowing across the lights and one of these blowing fresh air into the closet.

Since I own my house, I can cut a hole in the ceiling to the attic to vent into.  I have also thought about cutting a hole in the wall near the floor to bring fresh air into the closet.

You need to look into ventilation.

Without proper ventilation, your grow may suffer.

Humidity can cause mold. Heat can kill plants. Smell could get you busted.

You're still early in your planning, but once you get your new house and figure out your grow area, you should look into ventilation.
