Just starting out....
    #267128 - 08/18/09 11:11 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Hi folks. I am starting to gather the equipment for my first grow. I have most of the equipment listed that I am in the process of gathering. I will be utilizing the DWC method in the bedroom closet. Im just basically looking for any advice you guys can give me and correct me on any errors I may have made.

A pic of the type of unit I will be making.

The area I will be utilizing is 2'depth 8'wide 6' to the rack I will hang the lights from. From what I have been told that should be more than enough to house my veg room, flowering room and drying room.]
(I will upload some pictures of the closet space in the morning)

Growing Medium- Lava rocks/Rockwool (if I can find the rockwool)
Lights- Veg state and Flowering state
Water pump- Pump

No idea on fertilizer yet still doing some reading.

I know some of you like to use bubblers in this type of setup to oxidize the water and nutes but the water pump should provide enough to support the small grow I am planning.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You should consider buying a 150w HPS.

150w HPS: 16,000 lumens for $75
315w CFLs you linked: 17,000 lumens for $199

In addition to being twice as efficient, I guarantee you the HPS will run cooler than those three CFLs. You could take the $125 you would save and supplement the HPS with a couple CFLs, getting your lumen count up to 30,000~ for the same price you were going to pay for 17,000, and use the same amount of energy doing so.

Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

Wow thanks 206! Since money is an issue right now that helps alot. Ill look those lights up and update my configuration.

My closet space..

On either side there is about 2' of space not shown. and the bottom shelf will be taken out prior to setting everything up.

and this is attic access inside the closet I figure it might make for good ventilation??

Okay so I found a 150w HPS kit for $78.00  sounds a little more budget friendly than the $200 for the CFLs.  Now would these be a good set of lights to supplement the HPS? You'll have to forgive me I am terribly new at this and I feel getting answers from people with experience is best. :crazy2:

first, if you're already investing in an HPS, go with the 250W. a 150 is practically beans, you won't be sorry about stepping up to a 250.

Also, ditch the DWC. worst cultivation method, EVER.

I have to respectfully disagree on both points: http://www.rollitup.org/harvesting-curing/189730-harvest-150w-scrog-giant-colas.html

More wattage is always better than less wattage, but when money and heat are major concerns the 150w is more than sufficient. DWC = fast growth and big yields as long as you keep the res temp under control. It is the easiest hydroponic method with the least maintenance, perfect for beginners IMO. Just make sure you have a backup pump and airstone.

it is absolutely not the easiest hydroponic method with least maintenance. Both Coir and perlite offer all the benefits of hydroponic growing without any of the putzing with res temps, solution tds/ph readings, or changing the res.

and you don't need to tell me about heat issues with HID lighting, I've been growing in a non-ventilated 2x2 space for some time now, and I can confidently say that it's no problem.

Hmm well I appreciate your Input on the DWC method Harry and 206. I will look into other methods of cultivation. However The DWC method is a method that I am semi-familiar with. Years ago I was using the DWC method  and I didn't have any problems maintaining what was going on. However I didn't have a forum to help me with any issues I was having, or to correct me if I was doing something wrong either.

Since money is an issue at this point and time and I have some of the supplies readily available to me for the DWC method I think I will stick with it this time around. However in the future I will definitely look at other methods and see which I like best.

If anyone else has some tips for me regarding the DWC method it would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing about stepping up to a 250w right now is the cost. I know I should never skimp on lights and I can save money other ways but for $78 I can get the entire kit with bulb included. Whereas the 250w kits I looked at ranged from $180-250 with no bulbs included. I will definitely be upgrading my lights in the future. But Like I said. I am on a pretty tight budget right now unfortunately.

well I have a 250W hps for sale right now for only $50. Stoney69 said he wanted to purchase it,  but I bet if you sweet talk him he might let you get it from me.

Coir and perlite are soiless growing mediums, not hydroponic methods or systems. I agree that both are easier, but I was referring to DWC being the easiest out of DWC/Aero/Drip/Ebb n Flow/etc systems.

I was telling the OP who asked for advice, not making presumptions about your knowledge or experience.

Harry Thanks but Stoney has already made the deal with you I dont like stepping on ppls toes if you catch my drift. Anyways I think for my grow the lights Ill be using afe sufficient for a few plants. Im not going to get into any larger scale grows til I have my own space to do so.

206 thanks for your advice. :happyweed:
