When should I raise my lights?

These clones have been growing well for about a month now. They are about a foot from 2 175W MH bulbs. When should I raise the lights and how much should I raise them? There is fairly strong ventilation, a fan next to a window is blowing fresh air through whenever the lights are on so it does not get too warm. I know that the temperature inside the leaves is not supposed to go above 104 degrees or so. What are some signs of heat stress?

The general rule (at least as I understand it) is to place your hand right above your plants. If you can hold hand there without it getting to uncomfortably hot, your lights are in the place. Although I'm sure someone can give you a more scientific answer, that's just the rule I always used to go by.
By the way, looking good there in the pics

When leaves start to curl downward and the tips are discolored and brittle only on the leaves closest to the light is a good sign of too close lighting. Also lighter green to yellow discoloration on only the leaves closest to the light. If it is all over the plant, most likely a nutrient or ph problem. Just move the light up 3-6 inches and give it a day or so, if they start to perk up, your going in the right direction.

I think my hand will fall off before it gets uncomfortably hot above the plants. I'm planning to give it a few more days before I raise the light 6 inches or so. With my current lighting, how tall should I let these ladies get before switching to 12/12?
One thing I have noticed is that some sides of the plants are more ddeveloped than other sides, if that makes sense. I have been rotating and turning plants regularly but it looks like there are some bright/dark spots. I am considering doing an upgrade to a grow tent and 1 400W switchable HPS/MH. I think that the tent will help reflect a TON of light and I can grow a few more plants in there too. I am not in a position where I can be making modifications to my living space so a tent is sounding like a good idea.

A 400w HPS is usually fine at around 14-20" above plants, with proper vehilation that is. I'm not sure if MH run hotter than HPS. The upgrade to a 400w HPS would definetly be worthwhile. Especially since MH aren't the greatest to flower under. It's all up to you on when you want to start a 12/12 cycle. Keep in mind that your plants will grow atleast twice as big as when you first started flowering, and can also get considerably tall. If you started right now, I'de estimate they would be atleast 4ft at the end (depending on the strain also).

I have 4 purple Kush and 2 Sour Diesel. They are about 14-16" tall right now. If I start flowering at 20" tall would 1-2 ounces per plant be a reasonable guess for harvest time?
As soon as I can find a job I am going to buy a 3'11"x3'11" grow tent and a 400W MH/HPS Hydrofarm setup. I figure that if I find some taller pots I could cram 9 decent sized plants in there per harvest.
And just a random question: I grew the plants to this size in about a month from small clones. On average, how much longer would it have taken to get this size from a seed? I am trying to decide if I am going to go clone or seed for next grow. Dispensaries these days have terrible clone selection because of stupid city regulations.

Probably at least one per plant if everything goes right.

You would have about the same growth after 1 month with seed IMO. However, with clones atlest you know they are all female.

Thanks for all the info. I will have to look more into the whole feminized seed thing, I am really interested in growing some unique strains. In san Francisco where there are more dispensaries than starbucks, only 3-4 dispensaries that I know of sell clones, and the selection is not very good any more.

those guys are right but just to let stranded voyager know the rule of thumb is you want the light far enough away so you cant feel the heat from the light.....with CFLs its like an inch or two but you are using different lights.

Yeah. I'm guessing with 175W MH, 8" is about right. Notice the length between the nodes? The light is a bit too far away IMO.
