Alright all you soil growers, I wanna compile a list of all the soils that we use, please include all that you have used either working well or not, I would like to try and keep this thread a little orderly so thats others may use it as a soil reference, if you post about your dirt please use this format for the soil part of the post please,
Good Soil: (The names of the soils that worked best for you, remember name all that worked that you can remember pls) For each soil, pls inform us what you had to do to it before plants went in them. Description and/or pics of the soil/containers/bag
Black List: (The soils that go here are the bad ones, also if you want list some of the things that you have tried to revive dead soils with.) Description and/or pics of the soil/containers/bag if you want
:If you would like to name vendors But it would be nice if the stuff is only available in the UK or USA to let everyone know.
thanks guys I hope this tread does well and helps somebody.
and you can add compost piles of your own to the list but we are really gonna need/want a extensive write up on it, please.

Fox Farms soil is expensive but good soil. I can recommend their ocean forest and happy frog lines. Also get some light warrior to cut the soil with to extend the life of a bag and reduce the chances of the soil being too nutrient rich. Also helps with drainage and keeps your substrate nice and fluffy.

Miracle Grow Potting Mix.
No bugs, great moister retention and well, there's really nothing I've had to do to it cept plant the seeds. Fairly cheap, easy to find, and rated as Premium Potting Soil by the Mulch and Soil Council. I would'nt go so far as to say it's the Best of the Best, but it's all Ive used and it works great for everything I grow:)

I don't like the fact that nutes are already added though. I use the organic line of MG. Much easier to adjust things to ones liking.

Good: Fox Farm soils. I frequently use Ocean Forest and Light Warrior. A mix of something like 85% Light Warrior to 15% Ocean Forest is nice in my climate for seedlings. I have to be careful with the Ocean Forest, though, as it is highly water retentive and lately I've not been adding enough perlite or Light Warrior for adequate drainage on some of my plants.
Black Gold has also worked well, though I don't prefer it to Fox Farm. This stuff definitely needs some lightening with perlite, etc for my climate as well.
Bad: Anything Miracle Gro I simply ignore anymore. It's not terrible soil - I could definitely grow whatever in it - but it's pre-loaded with nutrients which I'm not fond of, I've gotten gnat problems, and I simply don't like the company and giving my money to the big corporate stores that sell the stuff. That being said I have successfully bought and used Miracle Gro Moisture Control for mushroom casings, though it's probably not the most ideal casing medium.

For some of us, Fox Farm and other top shelf soils just aren't available locally. Ordering something as heavy as soil isn't feasible either.
Not all Miracle Gro soil is as you say. The organic lines are .05-.05-.05% I believe. No time release nutes in there either. But yeah, on the whole MG sucks.

I in no way intended to imply that Fox Farm is available everywhere locally. Just stating my experiences with different soils. I'm sure, however, that even if you live in a rural area there's likely to be some sort of nursery around that's got non-miracle gro soil. At least here in the PNW there's nurseries galore.
Also, I made the comment about Miracle Gro having a lot of added nutes - I once bought a bag of MG perlite only to find out that the perlite had added nutes!

Yeah, their perlite sucks. It also has wood bits in it. I was pissed about it when I got some for myco stuff. Schultz perlite is good though.

Sorry for not being text-speak smart. I am however, researching soils as I prep for my first grow in a few weeks (waiting to scrape the bread together for a light).
What does QFT mean?
