Trick tip for all the soil growers out there.
    #466400 - 08/24/10 07:40 AM (14 years, 4 months ago)

OH SHIT!!!  you got fungus gnats, now what do you do.  buy parasitic nematodes? get neem oil? diatomaceous earth?

all good and well practiced ways to get rid of those pesky little dirt dwellers, that eventually take flight, but i found one even better... sand.  go to your home depot or garden store and you can get a nice size bag of sand for $3.  put a good inch plus of sand on top of your dirt.  you may have to pull some dirt out to fit that inch+ of sand or not, but i'm telling you... no more than 3 days and they're gone.  the larvae may still be in the dirt eating at the fungus, but when they turn into adults, they wont be able to climb through the sand and die. OH, and the adults that are flying around wont be able to dig into that sand.  if they do lay eggs on the sand, there's nothing there for them to eat, so they die.  the sand filters water very fast and smooth, you may want to water a little slower however to avoid sandy pot holes.  but over all, a cheap effective method.  just thought i'd share.

I wonder if there's any adverse effects of putting a layer of sand or fine gravel over your soil. For whatever reason I recall being warned not to but don't recall the reason.

lots of sand tends to have high salt content.  Also, if using too much, i could see how it would create real compaction issues, drastically limiting how much air got to the roots

You can easily sterilize sand.

i doubt it,it was most likely algae.
Either way more air flow and less water and that would not happen that's what made the fungus gnats come in the first place.

to each his own
i thinks its just that there are quite a few proven methods for this problem and people just use what they feel is best or what they have around.

It's actually a culture of bacteria that acts like a larvacide.
