hey guys, where i live there is high levels of cadmium in the soil, its a sort of metal i believe. we arent allowed to grow veggies in the soil because of this, would this have any negative effects on the plants? if i dig about half a meter deep and fill this with top soil would that be better? thanks

Don't even think about using that soil. Buy potting soil from a nursery and plant in a container, it's your only reasonable course of action. Cadmium is highly toxic and will bio-accumulate in organisms and ecosystems. Furthermore, it is absorbed more readily by the lungs than by the stomach... so if they're telling you not to grow veggies (which are obviously digested in the stomach), you sure as hell better not be growing a plant you intend to smoke (which would be absorbed by the lungs, further concentrating the toxic damage your body would incur).

Iron is the most common element on earth, and the fourth most common in the earth's crust. In other words, I don't think there's much you can do to avoid it!

If it's something you are really concerned about i would suggest checking out your local agricultural extension office. Just tell them you wanted to start an organic vegetable garden>
If need be, they will even do a soil analysis for you (mine cost about 18 dollars).

I love when people use logic and reference.
