heat in the closet, types of light and how much heat they make

i've got the closet turned into a little forest now, with 250ish watts of cfls. no ventilation, but the closet gets opened enough that heat never becomes an issue, nor does air exchange. i want to switch over to a 600w hps for flowering but the question is how much heat am i gonna have?
250w CFLs on 24/7 compared to 600w HPS on 12/12. my math says that if they made the same heat per watt it would be about a 50% increase in heat generated per 24 hours, but watt for watt, does one or the other make more? i thought i read that cfl's actually make more heat per watt but i cant find the info anymore.

a 600 hid is going to be way hotter than 600 watts of cfl's. you will need exhaust/intake

You will need a 4inch inline turbine at the min., I would suggest a 6in one though with a air-cooled reflector of course.

I'd have to disagree on that one. 600W of CFL's will produce nowhere near the amount of light intensity that a 600W HID will produce. all that extra energy is released in heat.
HID will be the way forward. You get more light for your money. Also the penetration is better due to the higher intensity so you get denser buds. CFL's produce fluffier buds.
You can get decent results with CFL's though. They aren't to be knocked for small grows or where heat is an issue.

i didnt say lumens/intensity i said heat. what are you saying?, that 600 watts of cfl's is hotter than 600 watts of H.I.D?

Yeah, I'd say they would be.
My point about the intensity was that a HID will output a lot of energy in light where as CFL's will output a lot of energy in heat alone. Hence the reason why the light intensity is not as good, majority of the energy is wasted in heat.
I'm not sayin a HID will not be hot, cuz i think we both know they put out quite a lot of heat. I'm just saying the equivalent in CFL's will generate more heat.

well now the situation is:
i'm running 200w cfl exactly. 24/0.
i'm going to put in a 400w hps for flower, 12/12.
theoretically the worst case scenario is that the temps over a 24 hour period (averaged) will be the same. but i think the peak temp will be higher by a good amount. looks like i'll have to make some changes

the 400W HPS will put out a good amount of heat. I've had a good fight with one trying to balance things out.
The easiest way I found was to put it on over night. The big drop in ambient temp helped balance everything out while the light was on, but it was kept steady through the day with the warmer ambient temp.
Once you get it all locked in you'll be so glad you went with the HPS. CFL's have their uses and in no way am I knocking them. I'm just not a fan of fluffy nugs.
Good luck with you grow dude! Let us know how it all turns out!

Johnny420 is absolutely correct. 600w of CFL's will put out more heat than an HPS of 600w.

dont dick around on this one. the biggest mistake a lot of my friends make when they decide to grow is to not have enough ventilation. get yourself an 8 inch ellicent fan w passive intake

lmao ......and it goes unnoticed......please see marijuana horticulure the indoor/out medical bible, page 208, top paragraph, lines 8-9 and 11-12 for a proffessional answer to the question of cfl's being hotter..........

ended up going with a 6" 188cfm fan, to go with the 400w hps. by my math it shouldnt be tooo hot. looked at bigger vortex, tested a few in the store and they were louder than i wanted to use right now.

6" is a good choice, 188cfm will do the job nicely I think. What brand fan did you choose?
