Using strip lights
    #154275 - 12/02/08 06:09 AM (16 years, 18 days ago)

My friend is building a one plant chamber he wants to use strip lights.

One vertically up each of the 4 sides of the chamber and 2 at the top.

Which strip light bulbs are the best to use?  I told him to go for the highest wattage which he said seems to be about 30watts at most stores.

Which type of strip lights would be best though, is it fluorescent's?

If you aren't going to do it right then your best bet is to get some CFL lights with a reflector, and keep them as close to the plants as you can.

Do it right?

The strip lights give off little heat so can be very close to the plant which is required in a stealth chamber.  I've heard of other people having success.

My friend is just not sure exactly what type of light would be most effective (closest to sunlight).  HPS is not an option here.

Whats CFL ?

And by strip lights I take it you mean florescent bulbs?? They suck to grow with. Get some of those...They use little energy, little light, and emit a pretty decent amount of light with the use of a reflector.

This is a strip light (the long bulb).

They emit hardly any heat and you can run them vertically next to the plant to provide light to the normally shaded areas.

The problem with HPS and MH is that they create too much heat.

This is a stealth chamber.

Surely if theres several flourescent strip bulbs on the 4 walls and say a flourescent spot light on the top it would fruit just as well as a HPS?

Or am I wrong?

Heres the long and the short of it...

Lumens are what make your plants grow. Hps is much more efficient than florescent in lumen:watt ratio. So, if you have 200w of flouros and 200w of hps, the hps will produce more light (lumens). On the converse side, any wattage that is not converted into light, is converted into heat so 200w of hps and flouro, the flouro will produce more heat.

Now as far as stealth boxes go, heat is always a problem. The best part about floros is they distribute the heat all over the place whereas hps is concentrated to a single spot; This can be advantageous to a stealth grower. If you build a cool tube or use an air cooled hood (hps), heat can be exhausted from your cab quickly. Floros on the other hand will compound upon themselves and heat the entire cab forcing the ventilation to move the entire contents of the box to remove heat and replace CO2 depleted air.

If you want the best possible combination, you will use both. Small hps lights have very little penetrating power, starving the lower branches of needed light. If you get a 100w hps light for your main light and either build a cool tube or an air cooled hood, the light will produce very little heat and since this light will always be affixed to the top of your cab, it will have very little chance of burning your babies. Now if you add some supplemental side lighting, say 90w of flouro tubing to the sides of the cab, the smaller side branches will also get enough light making for a larger overall harvest than compared to either hps of floro alone.

I like to hang CFL lights down in the canopy. Just my opinion on using both in combination.
