Vancouver seed bank Grow Log (and box construction)
    #114900 - 08/27/08 01:52 AM (16 years, 3 months ago)

I got these seeds from a vancouver seed store when i was there.  I have to admit they were just the cheapest ones they had   I need to check with my friend what strain they are, i forget.

Anyway, i am growing indoors in a box i am putting on the wall.....seeing as my living space is only about 4x4 meters plus a bathroom, i gave up stealth....if they come i am screwed no mater where it is i think.  so may as well make it convenient.

My goal is not so much getting good bud as getting seeds, so this will be a male and female grow.

Edit, i just found out these are their "Outdoor seed mix".....whoops!  goes to show, don't go seed shopping stoned and broke!

The Box
150cm (5') wide by 163cm (5'3") tall by 45cm deep (15").

it is above the ground hanging over my computer, or will be once finished.

venting etc will come soon.

Aug 28 did a little bit.....gotta get off my ass and do some more soon.

Aug 30, finished the framed doors, just gotta sheet the outside and pain/seal and do the lights and vents.

Aug 31.
All but painting, venting and some minor things like latches, light adjustments etc.

Sept 1.
Box is almost done, just need to light proof it and get the filter and venting done....and play with the lights cause they are pretty ghetto right now!

the box is done now minus venting/carbon scrubber.  i have everything except the carbon to make it, so i will do so when the plants are stinky.

Lighting
I plan on using fluorescent the whole way.  this is because it is very hot where i live and the last thing i need is a hot light setup.  for breeding i dont see why fluoro wont do a great job

Veg Lighting
1x 75watt 6500K cfl 65L/W 4875 4255
1x 65W 3000K cfl 65L/W(the 2700k were $20 more for the same wattage...???)
2x 32w 6500K cfl 68L/W 4352
4x 24" tubes (3 6500K, 1 2700K) 73L/W
total watts 284, total Lumens 19322

Flower lighting (should i up this?)
2x 65W CFl 3000K  65L/W 8450
2x 32w fl 2700K 68L/W 4352
4x 24" tubes 2700K 73L/W
total watts 274, total Lumens 18642

Soil
I havn't mixed anything yet, but i was thinking a coco coir, perlite, manure and some nice rich dirt from my garden.  I always eyeball everything anyway, so who knows how it will turn out?

Climate
Hot and humid here, so this may bring up some issues.  its always high 20's to 30's C.....will need to work something out for this.

The Plants
I am starting with just 2 plants at first to see what sexes i get.  i don't want more than 2 plants growing at a time to keep smell down.  This is a breeding not a harvest, so i want 1 male and one female and get a good supply of seed for the future (impossible to get here).

August 26 i put 2 seeds into paper towel to germinate.

Aug. 27, they are splitting and i can see the tap root poking through.

Aug. 28 got root.  just realized i have no coco left, gotta go get some tomorrow and plant these up.

Aug 29.
Planted in their own pots.  about 2 gallon pots.

Aug 30.
1 has sprouted.  i call this one Micky.

Aug 31. one died in a huge heat spike, Micky is good and the 2 seeds are sprouting well.

Micky:

seeds:

Sept 2 or 3 ???

only one of the seeds made it, some worms were eating the other one???

here is "Minni"

and here is "micky"

September 4, i burned em and heat stressed em badly that day!

micky.

September 07

micky is finally starting to grow faster now, can actually see growth daily.

Minni is alive....lol...too hot for her.

Sept 09
Micky

Sept 11
micky  (the other one died!!!shit!)

Sept 15.

Sept 16

Sept 22

Sept 26
it is branching from every leaf node!

here it is, 31 days old.

October 2

October 5
Looking good, all clones have decent roots.  took 3 more clones.  the roots are a day or 2 ago.

more pics as things progress.

thanks....its getting there.....the box will be done this weekend minus venting....gotta go fan shopping.

also started 2 more seeds, cause i figured the chances of starting 2 seeds and getting a pair are low.

I dont think they are too small, im sure the heat effected them from growing HUGE really quick but its not bad. Nice grow i think im going to be preforming something similar to this in a closet soon

Size varies greatly between strains, and even in strains, during the first 2-3 weeks. Once you flip those bitches in a week or so they will take off.

well, we got a visitor today!  this cute little lady big few in.  i left one of the doors open on the box, cause it was SMOKING hot today!!!  almost 40 in the living room!  thats Celsius....  in the box, i didnt want to look...i just opened the door, cranked the fan and shut the lights off for a bit lol.

i do have a question/concern.

generally animals stick around if there is food.....lady bugs eat pain in the ass insects, such as aphids and others we dont want on our plants....should i be worried????  there are ants, and a couple other unknown flying bugs that are around the box, but not damaging the plant...could the ladybug be around for that?

spider mites and other nasty bugs have never been a problem on my other plants, and i do grow other tasty plants inside.

the smaller one sure seems to be growing slooooooooowwwwwwww.  still just starting its first set of true leaves....

ps.  anyone else having upload troubles with pics here?  keeps timing out and/or failing/"interrupted" on me :frown:

so i rearranged my lights last night cause i couldnt sleep.  i would like some feedback to see if it ok or not.

at the back are 2 24" 6500K

the 2 big cfls are 65 W (2700K) and 75 watt(6500K, rightside)

behind the 75 w is a 32 watt 2700k

the 2 little ones are 22 watt 6500k and one bigger 32 w 2700k

as the plants grow they will have additional tubes at the back wall to give light lower down.

most of he 6500K will be switched to 2700K when 12/12 is on.

any suggestions?

and the bigger plant...the other aint doing shit....:(

I like the direction you are going with the way you are setting up your CFL's, spacing them in between plants and on the sides, as well as directly overhead. The downside of CFL's are their low penetration levels, and you'll be countering that by lighting the plants from all sides.
:super:
One thing I don't get, though, is why the fluorescents on the back wall are spaced so far over to the left. You have a lot of surface area there that isn't going to be reaching the plants, while you have space to the right where they could be, where the plant would need it to be. The same thing goes for the CFL on the left, the one in the front row of three. If it was on the right side of the big one in the front, the same way the other one is on the left side of the big one, that light would be there for the plant on the right as well.

Also, those two seedlings in that tupperware container in the front, it looks like they won't be getting enough light that far away from the bulb. The plants shouldn't be more than a couple inches away from the bulbs, as long as you're making sure that there isn't any excessive heat reaching them. Maybe that bulb is of a higher wattage and that is making a difference (my understanding of CFL's is only theoretical), but you should definitely make every attempt to keep seedlings, and plants in general, as close to their light sources as possible (without exposing them too much heat). This will keep stretching to a minimal, something that is especially important with seedlings, not to mention when working with CFL's, for the reasons already mentioned regarding the low penetration levels due to their intensity. Also, there is no reason to run anything but 6500k bulbs during the vegetative state. When they start to flower, you can switch all the sockets to 2700k. They love the blue light during vegetative state, and not getting enough of that right spectrum will encourage stretching. What you'll probably see if you stick with them is the plants growing towards the 6500k bulbs.

Finally, the best thing for your plants is to transplant them into containers that are filled nearly to the top of growing medium. Not filling it all the way is only taking away roots that would be there if you filled it up all the way, which means you're taking away from the plant's ability to carry out its processes.

Ahh, also, how will you go about moving the lights up as the plant grows? :strokebeard:

excellent points!

the tubes at the back are to the left because when the plants grow and i take cuttings i plan on have 4 plants in here, and the pic above is only half the cab.

here is a pic to show the whole thing.

not sure if you can see them, but there are 2 small boards (2x2) going up the back wall, this is where i am planning on screwing the 24 or 48 inch tubes (things may change...also thinking about t5).  i hope for these to provide enough light lower down...i may install some on the side walls as well.  any thoughts about that?  i may also just put a double on each of the 4 posts on the back wall (theres only 2 there now) going vertical.

the cfl spacing was simply due to lack of materials, i am adding 2 more fixtures to that front row next time i go to town

the whole cfl thing is one wooden frame with a piece of painted ply on top to reflect the light.  there are 4 screws holding it to the frame, so as i move it i just unscrew and screw it in higher up.  right now the the big bulbs are 3" away and the ones hanging down are 3-5" away, roughly.

i plan to have 2 of these, one on each side of the cabinet....if i choose to use the other side for pot.  those little seedlings in front are not weed, they don't like huge intense light, so they are pretty happy there

so i should add more soil to the pots?  easy enough   the smaller plant will have to wait, i dont know what i did to it but it sure aint happy and has completely stalled....maybe heat stress?

thanks for the help bro!

here it is today, Sept 26.  this one now has 7 finger leaves, and is branching a lot!  in about 2 weeks i hope to take a couple cuttings and will 12/12 the cuttings to check sex.  its about 8" tall now at day 27.  is this a little small for the age you guys think? 4 weeks and only 8"?  its pretty damn compact though, and very sturdy.

That is one bushy plant man. Looks good but is there some kind of discoloration on the middle plant or is that just the picture that might be a reason for it to stall. Have you checked the ph and such ?

those pics were taken with the daylight bulbs on and a flash, so not the real color...the yellow leaves i am thinking its the ph.  it used to be around 7-7.5, i am working on getting it lower, its 6.5 now...suggestions are more than welcome!
