I know that black lights aren't going to provide enough of the right kind of light that the plants need. The plants turning purple because of the black lights sounds pretty implausible to me.... why did your two buddies think that it would make sense to even try using black lights?

Photosynthesis works by absorbing several specific wavelengths of light. Blacklights do not provide these wavelengths. Are you sure tha plant does not just look purple under the blacklight?

uhm well i think it might just be a purple strain but I'm not too sure they don't only use black lights they use sunlight from their windows too but its their first time ever growing and i was just curious about the black lights

the 2 kinds of black lights make UVA light, one type creats a "little" blue light, but not much....and it uses filtered glass.
UV damages plant cells. whether or not uv causes the plant to create trichomes, i am not sure....

actually I've read that UV wavelengths are extremely important in THC production within the tricromes. It acts as a catalyst as the sub-components of thc cross the disc cell barrier.

Oh, I should add though, unless the plants are in late flowering, the blacklights will do jackshit

which is why i say they may help thc, but they dont help plant growth!
this is probably why many plants have anthocyanin, to protect against UV stress on the cells.
form my understanding, UV doesn't really do jack shit, it stresses the cells and causes certain pigments to be there to avoid stress (among other things like too much light).
in a way it may be good for bud, cause it *may* increase tch production which may be a secondary defense against harmful radiation....but as far as a growing plant, it just wastes a plants energy while growing.

UVB is the spectrum of light that promotes development of THC, although UVA might to a much smaller degree. Either way, a black light just isn't going to do anything for the plants but generate heat, really.

UVA doesn't do jack for cannabis cultivation, like you said UVB is the wavelength you want. I'm surprised your friends plants are still alive after only getting filtered sunlight and black light.

you can do better for less money at your local lighting store and *if* the UVB does help thc, you only need it in flower.
has this UVB theory being proven yet?

there's no such thing as "proving" a theory, but there is a ton of empirical evidence suggesting that UVB light is an extremely important catalyst for THC production, but certainly not necessary (and generally detrimental) to tissue growth

that uvb light would work just fine, you can also visit your local petshop and pick one up if you don't want to order online.

One thing to consider, too, is that cannabis is either mostly a equatorial plant, or a plant of higher altitudes, thereby being exposed to more UVB.

look at other brands as well, aquarium lighting have some good tubes as well, just look at the charts on the manufacturers websites.
