Anyone running CMH for flowering?  :greenthumb:

they have high PAR and lower wattage than HPS but HPS cranks my power bill up..

I have a 4'W x 6'L x 8'H area to light.. Opinions?  :rasta:

I dont understand LED diy builds so please dont suggest those unless you have a completely built unit to link to. :hehehe:

I use HPS and MH for flowering. BTW Your two links to ebay are nfg.

Do the math and you can tell me or i will just do it for you. LED and CMH are both way more expensive to buy then MH or HPS. But slightly cheaper on power. A ballast will run you about $500.00 and the bulbs for a duel 315 watt CMH is $180 at $90 a pop you can buy 400 watt hps and mh for $15 a pop this adds up when replacing bulbs every year $30 vs $180. LED is a joke most people don't get they dim over time just like HID lights and need to be replaced every year or two if you want to stay above 90% efficiency. LED life span is based on it loosing 30% of its light output and are rated to last for up to 10 years before they dim 30% but only last one to two years above 90% efficiency.

FYI I run a grow room of 5x4x7 and two 400 HPS/MH units produced over two pounds of super lemon haze on my last run. Cost in power was 840 watts x 12 hours a day for three months at 12.5 cents per kwh works out to $105.00. Reducing your power from 840 to 650 is a saving of 190 watts x 12 hours for three months is a grand saving of $24.36. So if you grow four times in a year your saving is $100.00 in power but $150.00 more in the cost of the bulbs alone.

Im not starting from zero, I currently have 2 x 1000w HPS with a ballast each for flowering my hydro ebb n flow but I only run a T8 x6 light for vegging ..

Id think 1x 630w duel CMH has to be cheaper to run, less heat and still produce yields with PAR that high..

LED's are getting pretty good now, but yeah, they are expensive.  For a 4x6 room, at 30 watts/square foot, you'd need 720 watts of power.  I'd go with three 250-300 watt units, each covering a 2x4 space, if you decided to go with LEDs.

Here's one I'd look into.  Comes with a 3 year warranty.  Cost for three would be $1200.  Mars hydro used to be laughable but these lights actually look pretty good.

Your running 2000 watts in a 6x4 foot room? Wow that's 83 watts per square foot. And I thought my 40 watts per square foot is rather high. Best of luck buddy but if you want to save a little money try running two 600 HPS or just one 1000 unit.

BTW you can check out my results in the grow journal.

nah I had that setup in my last house in a larger full room with scrog nets over 12 plants, Ive since moved and thats my new areas dimensions, thats why I was wanting to downsize the power usage.

All this talk of 30-40w per sq ft HID lighting... I've always been under the impression that 50w/sq ft of High-Intensity-Discharge lighting (MH/HPS) was the gold-standard minimum required for proper lighting requirements?

Anyways... What's special about this "CMH" light that makes it a candidate as a potential lone-source of light for flowering? Something different about the spectrum of light it produces? (The "metal halide" in the name leads me to assume it's in the bluer/cooler spectrum - traditionally reserved for vegetative growth).

I'd vote "HPS" in the poll but, it's all I have experience with for flowering; so I can't really give any proper sort of comparison against other lighting systems.

I was told PAR was what the plant used in the light spectrum more than lumens and those CMH have the highest PAR ratings of all the types of lights.  or something close to those lines.. :stoner:

I read it somewhere as well after hearing about it but I couldnt remember where so I figured I would bring it up here

I use HPS but the heat generated by 2000w and the wattage used is too much for what Im doing.. I dont have high enough ceilings either.. 7.5' at most.. :smirk:

This video explains lighting pretty well;

Cannabis Grow Lighting Myths and FAQs

He has other videos that may also be of interest to you, just search for Bruce Bugbee.

The strip type LED fixtures can be ran closest to the canopy at lower wattages for best efficiency.  If height is a concern that would be the way to go.  The timber grow lights cypress seems like a good light for the price for a 4x4.  Then you'd just need something for the 2x4.
