Could anyone show me an example of what to look for?

One time I looked up carbon filter and I got pictures of the blue square ones for a/c units. I was thinking of rigging one of those up.

carbon scrubber? you can build your own but it's almost as expensive as buying one. nice thing is you can make it custom.

What Ben18 posted is what you want. You also want a fan with a high CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) something over 200. The Carbon filter and fan together will probably be like 500 bucks but they are well worth it an last about 18 months or 6 runs or so depending on how you have your room set up. You can make your own filter but I heard those aren't very effective.

Hey, thanks for those links. That 4" fan will clear my friend's space he wants to use in like one minute. It looks like a really nice one but does it make a lot of noise?

Also, it says those carbon filters last for a year under typical conditions. How long have they lasted you?

I'd say they generally last closer 16-18 months. The 4 inch filter/fan is recommended for up to a 8x8x8 space. The EcoPlus fan is nice, but the Vortex Inline Fans are quieter.

You also want a fan with a high CFM (Cubic Feet per Second) something over 200.

CFM = Cubic feet/min. Not per second.

Also the CFM of your fan is related to the size of your grow room. Smaller rooms can use smaller fans. Also the wattage of your lamp is also important as well. Even if you have a small space (actually especially if you have a small space) you'll need to move more air then you would with a weaker lamp.

On the flipside it never hurts to have more power then you need, but, if you're low on cash things like the blower fan from stanley can be modded to be used in your system. So, if you can afford it, buying a nice fan will help you more in the long run. If i had the cash i would be looking with something with an 8 inch out/intake. A fan like that allows you some more room to upgrade in the future.

As for the carbon scrubbers, make em, buy em, it's not much of a difference. The commercial filters are hassle free, a little bit more expensive, but ready to go out of the box with little to no problems. DIY jobs are great in that you can go as big, or small, as you want and in the long run you'll spend less because all you need is more activated carbon to replace the used stuff. The more plants you have in your room, or, the more smell your plants put off the bigger you're going to want your filter to be. The size of your filter also effects the size of your fan, the bigger you go with the filter the bigger you need to go with your fan since it has to pull air through the filter now. A buddy of mine runs two 400 watt lamps in a 5x2 area with only 3 feet of the room being used for growing. He uses an 8 inch high power fan and runs a decently sized scrubber and can keep temps in the low 80's to high 70's with the lights on.

So how well do carbon scrubbers work?

If a person has eight 1k hps air cooled lights, could all of this air be cleaned by pushing it through a carbon filter? I think a fan would have to run at least a couple thousand CFM to cool such a room. This seems like too much air for one carbon filter to handle...though I have no experience with such a setup.

if you are running 8000 watts you could probably get away with running two very large carbon filters. One to scrub the room and another on your out take air.

I understand the carbon filter on the outtake, but how does the "one to scrub the room" fit in?

I was thinking about splitting a room into halves, with 4 air cooled lights each, and running one fan through each set of 4 with a carbon filter at the exhaust end. Either that or just go ahead and use one big fan to cool the entire 8 lights and only one carbon scrubber at the exhaust.

If you just have one on the outtake its not really removing the smell inside your room, which usually leaks out of somewhere like airconditioner or attic smells, so you can put one in your room and it will 'scrub the air' so to say, and gives it this unique carbon filter smell. I really like the smell actually. So that way your outtake air doesn't smell nor does your room. 8000 watts should get pretty smelly without a carbon filter.

As for your cooled lights another option which I've done that I like is to buy a booster fan and have your lights all connected which just makes things easier if you don't want to have two outtakes for your lights.

The plan I'm considering calls for the construction of a plywood box in which the growing activity is contained. All the seams where the wood comes together will be sealed. I don't think smells would leak...unless they permeate structural plywood...what do you think?
