Replanting to Final Pot

Hydroponic drain-to-waste coco grow. I have vegging plants in 4" coco-filled coco pots and they will soon be wanting to be in their final home.
The plants will go into new3 gallon plastic pots in the coco pots they are in. I will have a base of coco to help place the plants at the proper height in the pot and will fill the remaining empty space with more coco once each plant is positioned. I am thinking of allowing the stalks to be covered a further 1/4" to 1/2" from their present level where they break the surface of their coco pots. The withered cotyledons are 1-1/2" to 2" off the deck currently.

Sounds like a solid plan. Do you add anything to your coir or run it straight? You can bury the stem as much as you want really it won't hurt, I've seen folks on the forums bury them to the first node.

This is a first run at growing anything, let alone going the hydroponic route. I found out, in time hopefully, that brick coco is hotter than a firecracker. Major flushing even in the 4" pots to fix that screw up on my part.
Lesson learned. Being a cheap bastard, I am using up the 3 bricks I have on hand but have a bag of Canna's product for future use. I am currently flushing the raw coco with 20ppm tap water pH adjusted to 5.7. When my runoff is in the proper pH range (5.5 - 5.9), I'll hit it with a dose of 1/2 strength CaMg to prime it so long as I have lowered the ppm sufficiently to support the additional solids. That is what I hope to be replanting into.

It gets better once you start reusing it. I'll go and pick up a small brick every once in awhile to replenish what I lose in the root ball. I'll probably run 30 gallons of tap through a brick, that shit is a pain to rinse clear or almost clear. I really don't do anything else to it except mix it in with a bunch of reused.

What are your thoughts on using tap water that is soft, i.e. 20 - 22ppm, but oddly alkaline, 8.0 - 8.2pH? I've been pH balancing it in 2 gallon lots and then giving coco a good hour or so soak. Three to four flushes seems to be workable for the ppm but the pH fights the drop all the way.
Will check the runoff when I do the CaMg prime. That stuff is reasonably cheap so I'll waste some if I have to. I'm more worried about the pH at the moment. I want to get it right before I move anything into pots for the home stretch.

My tap is about 250ppm I use it to flush out the coir and it seems to work fine, tap pH is 7.8 or so. I use the fine coir for reptiles now the coarse stuff wouldn't stop messing with my mag/cal and it's harder to recycle without getting tons of roots .
I don't really mess with pH I have a big nursery pot with screen in the bottom that I put in a colinder and I set it on the toilet then start pouring hot water through it. I do about 10 gal then let it sit for about a hour then 3-4 gal more the let it sit more. I do that till if comes out almost clear it could take 20+ gal. Most people just buy the stuff that's been pre rinsed and buffered. I used to pour calcium hydroxide solution over it and let it sit for awhile to help kill the ph, I would rinse it before use tho not sure how roots would react to it.

Good food for thought going forward.
I find it interesting you make a distinction between smooth and chunky. I've got chunky, complete with the coco equivalent of tree trunk pieces in it. I now wonder if these chunks possibly don't leach out as readily and my be responsible for the rebound I'm getting.

This is the beginning of week #3 of my veg cycle for these babies. This week and one more followed by light flip and feeding change. In spite of a rough start which was particularly hard on one plant I seem to be on the road to redemption. The tallest plant is ~10" at this point. Lighting is 400W MH at 18" above canopy. The one pot has a different surface colour and texture because I used up all my brick coir (never again) and had to finish it off with the Canna brand product. Looking forward to flipping the light and finding out just what gender these really are (non-feminized seed).
This one is best of show so far.
Advice on stem burial was spot on. Lots of extra rooting from the stem once it went under. These plants will feed well, that's for sure.

All for naught. All I was going to get from these was a crop of bowling balls, lol. Onward and upward. Will run a couple of auto fem Early Miss from Crop King and give myself some elbow room so I can go back to farting around with regular seed strains for a bit.
