as a bartender working at a nicer bar, we get to try all the new boutique liquors that come in, and get mostly free drinks. knowing the drinks and the liquor (or bud in your case) makes you a significantly better and more knowledgeable employee. the model you are describing will create poor. uneducated employees, and it will be hard to keep the good ones. sucks because the owners are kind of right, people are gonna be buying weed so they will most likely still stay in business. still shitty though.

idk about WA state, but as budtenders (here in colorado) they get free shit all the time, depending on how cool the dispensary owners/managers are. thats one of the benefits on being a budtender vs grower or trimmer. i got free edibles and test bowls of weed when i was a budtender at a rec shop.
dont get me wrong, MED laws are strict, but theyre not strict enough to the point where employees cant get free stuff. every place ive worked i got discounts at.
