New Budtender

So, I finally started working at a new rec cannabis store. I like it but it definitely wasn't what I expected.
First of all, as employees, we the budtenders get no discount on product and this shit is expensive, averaging $25/gram. I can't afford that. We are also not allowed to accept samples from the farms or distributors of edibles or other infused products. (We are also not allowed to accept tips which is least of my concerns.)
The business owners know virtually nothing about cannabis having little or no experience consuming it. The managers, assistant managers and other Budtenders have minimal weed experience either. I think I'm the only chronic user in the store.
So, how are we supposed to speak intelligently about the bud if they don't let us sample it?? When customers ask, "have you tried this, what do you think about it," I have to say nope. They want us to talk about the lineage of the strain, who are the parents, etc. Memorizing the family trees of 50+! constantly changing strains is a chore and I wonder if the customers even care about that.
I wonder if the business will survive being way overpriced and with clueless Budtenders. Do other rec cannabis businesses conduct business this way?

yea, most of the industry is like that here in colorado too. it's fuckin ridiculous. ive dealt with shitty unethical business owners on too many occasions. ive quit jobs because of it. a lot of owners are only in it for the money, dont even USE marijuana, and dont care about their customers or employees, because they sell weed, and they think they'll always have business and new people to employee. thats especially the case in the larger chain stores.

Crushnazt. Did you or have you heard of budtenders having to sign a non compete form saying you won't work in the industry for 3 years after being fired, laid off or quitting? Is that even legal?

That sounds like fucking bullshit.
I know ppl that work in liquor stores and they regularly have taste testings for customers and they always tell the employees to sample it themselves before hand so they can accurately describe it to the customers and make reccomendations.
I even know places that randomly give out bottles to their employees just for them to increase their knowledge about that particular bottle. Some places even have weekly employee only tastings as part of their training.

im not sure if its legal, but i know some companies do that. a girl i worked with at a retail store had to sign one for her previous job, but i dont think anyone actually takes legal action. it's pretty ridiculous and a jury would probably side with you. they wont side with a business preventing an individual from having a job, ya know? fuck that shit. companies that do that are scum.

The dispensary I frequent must be more laid back. All of the employees seem to be seasoned smokers, and take sample bags home daily.

Damn, i didn't know it was like this in WA and CO, thats fucked up. The owner of the collective i delivered for here in socal was awesome, gave me pay advances, %30 off all product, all fire too. And he'd encourage us to sample every strain and know the product. Now they're one of the top delivery services in socal. Gotta give love to get love.

I think your collective's business model makes a lot more sense which is probably why it's successful. The company I work for says there are restrictions put in place by the Wa state liquor control board (WSLCB) limiting their store to 4 g of sample cannabis a month which must be sealed, bar coded and tracked from seed to sale or sample. The WSLCB is pretty screwed up and with the outrageous taxes and over regulation of the industry, a healthy, viable business landscape is absent and this does nothing to encourage a budding (no pun intended) industry's growth or Hell even existence.
I call weed in Washington kinda legal.

I have a friend who does all the bitch work for a rec grow op and makes jack shit, like 13 an hour or something horrible. He asked his boss about taking home finger hash and a little trim, and his boss responded with "you can go to one of our stores, buy some weed, and pay taxes on it. welcome to colorado"
No thanks. Black market or death

what a fuckin dildo.
Trim has always been free for me. The local growers just garbage it usually.
With a lil bit of work it makes great hash/dabs/edibles

It's now a felony to produce, so I'd thank that 'scumbag' for assuming all of the risk.

He's not a scumbag for taking a cut. He's a scumbag for being a scumbag and beating up women and taking advantage of his "friends." Are you really just going to follow me around on this site and troll me on everything I say? Jesus you are sad. Defending opiates, spreading misinformation, telling me I should be thankful for women beaters
OP, sorry for the derailment of your thread. Bumble dick loves trolling me. FWIW, I've never met someone who has had much luck making it working for a dispensary. I hope you find a better job where you actually get to smoke some of the weed
