speaker set up help

My parents got a sound bar and gave me their old surround sound system, but I'm not sure what the best way would be to set it up.
It has an hdmi connection so I was going to plug that directly into the tv. It does have a bunch of other ways though.
I also don't get how I set the speakers up as far as the wires. It has 2 front, 2 back, 1 center, and 1 sub. It looks like I'm suppose to plug the speakers into the reciever and then from the same speaker ports on the reciver I need to branch off and plug those into the sub. This is the part I'm confused about.
I can get the brand and model later if needed.
What is the best way to set these things up? What wire would I need to connect my pc to the reciever?

HDMI is going to be your best bet if it has in and out. If not, digital optical(the plug with the light shining through) will handle all input and output in a single cable. Lower quality, but unless it is a high end receiver, you likely won't be able to tell the difference. Also, make sure you do not bend the optical cable if you use one. It will kink the glass inside and light won't be able to send the data. Depending on your pc, hdmi would also be the best way to connect. You will need the front speakers in the front on the left and right, the center goes in the front in the middle, and the rear speakers behind you on the left and right. The sub can go anywhere and be effective, so this is based on preference/length of cable.

I got the placement of the speakers figured out...
I was wondering more about the speaker, sub, receiver wiring.
Do I go speaker, to sub, or receiver or
Speaker, to receiver, to sub?
How do I know if there is both an in and an out hdmi? There is a total of 4 hdmi ports on the back of the receiver. BD, HDMI 2, cable sat, and HDMI out... I think. Are you saying I will need 2 HDMI wires?

You will need an HDMI cable from the TV to the receiver, and another for each device you want to hook up. The labels on the ports don't actually mean anything except for the one that says output. The other three are inputs. That is the one that goes to the TV. Don't use the speaker inputs on the sub. Just the connection cable that goes to the receiver. So for the speakers, run them to the back of the receiver, and also run the sub to the receiver.
Think of your receiver as somewhat of a central hub for all of your devices. Everything goes into it, and then a single output to the TV.
So it will go: speakers-->receiver via HDMI sub-->receiver via HDMI computer-->receiver via HDMI TV-->receiver via HDMI using the output slot
The reason you want to use HDMI is because it passes HD video and audio through a single cable. It is limited in the fact it only passes one direction though, so you need a receiver with HDMI out(which you confirmed you have).

Ah, very cool. I just wasn't getting why the sub had speaker wire ports too.
Thanks man. This was helpful.

No problem. The extra speaker ports are just configurations for different receivers. Usually only subs that didn't come as a package with the receiver have them.

So I got everything set up, but the sub might be fucked up. It has a continous hum/ rumble. It sounds okay/ kinda crappy on the lowest levels, but that's it.
The system either sucks or I set it up wrong.
