Updated Question [and thanks to everyone again for the help!]
I'm having issues with the exhaust system. I read I need a ~200cfm exhaust fan for size of the tent, so I found 240cfm, but the only carbon filters I can find are 440cfm (they come with a fan as part of the combo's), and from my understanding the exhaust fan has to have greater/equal to CFM of carbon filter. Is having too 'high' of a CFM bad if the space doesn't require it? Would a speed controller for the exhaust fan fix this [Speed Controller] Am I overthinking this?
Hello Growery,
It's my first post. Hurrah.
I've been reading all day and I think I've figured out mostly what I'm trying to accomplish, ordered seeds from a vendor and everything.
The problem I'm having is lighting. I've done a few hours of research and am getting nowhere.
I only plan on having one plant for personal use. The 'tek' I'm sort of following recommends using CFL's.
I'm running into one main problem with this [I'm gonna number the Q's for my own sake]:
1) How do I hang the CFL's horizontally over the plants? Is this even necessary? Originally the plan was just to 'dangle' the cords over a horizontal pole I have in my back room but I don't think having 4 lights just 'hanging' over the plant is necessarily a good idea, maybe I'm wrong. I want something that I can plug the lights into, and raise/lower it with a pulley system as the plant grows, but I'm coming up short in my 'research'.
This made me think that maybe I should use a grow tent, which lends to more questions I couldn't really find an answer to.
2) How important is light leakage? Would just having the plant in a bathroom sized room be a 'waste' of light, thus necessitating a grow tent?
3) Do grow tents REQUIRE air circulation like exhausts/intakes? Would I kill my one plant if I just had the 4x CFL's and the plant in the tent with no circulation? I assume the answer is YES but I don't want to spend X amount of dollars extra if I don't have to (I'd be using either LED/CFL's, still trying to figure that out). I was thinking of using something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Horticulture-GL60LED-Spectrum-Growing/dp/B00FGFW0XO/ref=pd_sim_lg_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0CH3353GKZK95M3K889H and was curious if air circulation would be required.
4) The reason I want a grow tent (in this case) is that I might just use a LED grow light instead, since I've noticed many more 'options' as far as a hanging system that would be easier to 'move' with the growth of the plant. This could just be my beginner ignorance speaking as well.
Thanks for the reply. The links were very helpful. How much is there to controlling the airflow? Do I need to have some kind of duct speed controller, or have them on timers?
For the most part I doubt I'll ever have more then one plant, it's for two medical patients who only smoke at night.
I assume the purpose (of ventilation) then is just to 'refresh' the air rather than 'condition' the air?
With one (or two) plants at no more than say 4 foot tall, is the smell going to be pretty bad? I was gonna skimp on the carbon filter since the tent will be in the backroom but I don't want guests getting blasted in the face by the smell.
Have you heard/had any negatives with LED's other than the initial cost?
I'm just wondering if HPS is 'too much' for me, plus I'm worried about electricity bill if using more than ~300 watts.
Also, as far as using CFL's/T5's, is an exhaust system even necessary in a tent? I've been doing some reading that said otherwise, but I'll probably implement it regardless.
Well I was about to go ahead and get T5's but it seems that would be stupid having read all that. I'll go with the HPS .
While we're on the topic, is the 2700/6400K thing the same with HPS (i need 2 dif bulbs?), or is it 'one HPS to rule them all?'. I know with the CFL's everywhere said you need one for veg one for flowering. I'm sure my ignorance is really showing right now.
Are those 3 passive intakes on the tent enough for me, or should I add some kind of forced air intake down at the bottom? Is it usually advised to put a regular table-top fan at the bottom of the tent as well?
