24hr vs. 18 hr of light...
    #758051 - 11/19/14 10:11 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

Is there any significant advantage/disadvantage of 24 hr/day vs.18 hrs light when starting seeds and throughout the veg period? I'm going to start just a couple seeds using one 100w HPS bulb and a couple 200w equivalent CFLs ( 6500k, 40w, 2800 lumens each ).  How about when starting and vegging clones? Any major performance difference between 18 and 24 hr light cycles?  Would adding a couple 2700k bulbs ( or bulbs with a different K value ) make any difference?  :thanx:...:takingnotes: . . . :peace:

I'm a 18 hr a day man myself but others swear by the 24 hr thing. I myself found no benefits when I tested this theory out. From what I've studies on the plant it needs some shutdown time each day just like we do.

CFL light I can't comment on I don't use them.

I can only mirror Magash' statement. I started out using 24hr initially, and it works great, no complaints, no issues whatsoever. I switched to 18 and didnt see a difference, figure I might as well be saving a few bucks if there is no difference.

This debate will never end imo. Heres a copy paste of some responses I got on MP when I asked this question.

Quote:

MJ is one of those magical plants, while in its veg stage it technially doesnt need a dark period, all a dark period does is cause the plant to stretch between nodes, the plant can continue to grow and grow and grow without ever seeing a dark period for years, i have a friend who has a mother plant thats going on its 9th year alive and every clone grown and flowered is still as good as it was 9 years ago.

Quote:

That is one of the common misconceptions about cannabis. Some plants need a dark period and some plants don't. Like Sunakard mentioned, cannabis is one that doesn't need a dark period--there is no benefit to a dark period when in veg. Running 18/6 encourages the plant to stretch (looking for light) during the dark period, 24/7 light and the plant will grow--develop new internodes rather than stretch.

I have no idea why he talks about how long his mothers have been around. I've been doing 18/6 since I tested against the 24hr thing didn't find the stretching thing to be true. I've had mother plants since 1991 with 18/6 but that has nothing to do with it. Who know it may change from strain to strain depending on where on earth it came from. I just haven't found that to be the case but I won't say that it's not

... I am confused.  Are you saying you have mother plants over 20 years old, or been doing this since 1991?  Anyway, thanks for the answers, I think I'm going to let my babies rest 6 hrs a  day.  I think I'll also read some of the 'related threads' below. ( I figured this question was asked before.:crazy2:)  And yea, I'm using these CFLs for now just to get a couple plants going. Any real grow room set up will have to wait a little bit until I can get my finances in better shape, and maybe a little closer to Springtime...:growingweed: . . . :peace:

24hr light does not hurt the plants at all during veg. They grow continuously when there is light always present. The only difference I could see is that they would maybe stop growing during the dark period. So theoretically, doing an 18/6 would just slow them down a bit.

I've been around the horn on this.. at first with 24 I swore I could see that 6hrs of growth in result of light use. If that were true, theoretically the power usage resulting in growth would be equivalent but in a shorter time span. So the savings would be in time spent. Then I realized that the potential to save power  was also compounded with this other important fact:
Its good to have shutdown time for your lights. We have hot ballasts and lots of juice flowing...

Rests are good for anything mechanical or electrical and I stand by that statement.

I've always read keeping them on 24/7 is best for the bulb as turning it on and off and having it warm up apparently wears it faster.

Giving the equipment a daily break makes sense, as does the idea of added wear and tear doing a daily start up.  I think I read some where that power use spikes significantly on warm up and that it would be cheaper to just run 24/7.  I'm not really concerned about the :money:. when I had my veg area running 24/7 growth was great but if I had a power outage or any interruptions in the cycle the plants wanted to flower due to a change in light cycle..

I run 18/6 now just for that reason so every lil thing doesnt trigger my plants b4 I want them to.  :bongload:

The notion that giving a plant continuous light will produce more vegetation is about the same thinking that giving higher fertilizer dosage will also help.  I don't think so.  18/6 is still a lot of hours of light.  The plant needs down time, it's called "night".

There doesn't seem to be much proof that 24 hr light is in anyway beneficial or bad to be honest. Until it's proven my lights are 18/6. The other reason I use 18/6 is that most plants have a two-phase cycle: an anaerobic one (i.e. “breathing” CO2) during the day, and an aerobic one (“breathing” O2) at night. I figure there has to be a reason for it.

Either way just grow your plants. :crazy2:

Damn. This, from what I've seen, is totally valid. That alone is enough to consider.
Its kind of a big deal actually...

I have a question and dont want to start a new thread, hope OP doesn't mind me asking here...

Ive only been growing for a couple years now and have always done 18/6 but I starting some new seedlings in another room and have had them under 24 hour light for a week now. When they get big enough to transplant I was planning on moving them to my normal veg area, will it stress them much to switch them to 18/6 or do I need to keep them under 24 hour light since they've been this way since they were planted?

They stop photosynthesizing during the dark period, so that's not when they would be stretching.  Sure you want them as close as possible, but the logic behind what you are saying is off.
