24 hrs of darkness before harvest? (outdoor)
    #686442 - 09/27/13 03:14 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

So In the book I have at home it says "the plant needs 24 hrs of darkness without water, before u can start cutting"
For indoor it shouldn't be a problem because u have them inside and just leave the light out...
how do you figure this out on outdoor plants? is this even necessary?

If you google "24 hours of darkness before harvest," you will find so many discussions about it that it's not even funny...

Some say it increases yield,
Quote:

Basically the point is to make the plant seem like its going to die. Some lower the amount of hours of light the plant gets late in flowering to do this, some leave it in the dark for 2 days up to a week.

The reason why someone would do this is because not only does it increase yield (And supposedly resin) but it increases the amount of terpenes the plant produces. Terpenes or terpenoids, however its properly said result in things from a better tasting plant to the affects of serotonin on your brain, there are over 120 of them in this plant and we dont know what all of them do exactly, much like how there are over 60 cannabanoids and the situation still holds true.

link

...and others say it helps flush the plant:
Quote:

he roots draw all the sugars and carbs from the nutes back down to the roots for better processing and use for the dark period exercises. When light hits the canvas it triggers the plant to circulate those products back into the foliage for the light period processes. As a final product, we don't want the sugars and what not in our herb so it makes sense to leave the plant in total darkness for a period before harvest. Without light for a long time.... say 24 hours... all the shit is in the roots and NOT in the buds!

link

I've never heard of this before but it seems to be pretty common knowledge.

We dont want sugar in our buds?

The whole point of photosynthesis is for a plant to convert co2 gas and h20 into glucose, which is a sugar.

The fact that there are even buds on the plant shows that the plant has so much excess nutrients and is growing healthy that it turns all the extra into fruit or flowers.

Thats like saying darkness is going to suck the sugars out of a tomato. Maybe some return to the root zone, but not all of it.

Wtf

I tried darkness with no noticeable results. I always make sure to let the pots dry completely before harvesting so that its lighter and easier to move.

I'd like to see some clinical trials from people using this technique and claiming it works, cause it seems like B.S.

Stop with the nutes and flush 2 weeks before harvest.
