DWC/Net Pot question

So if you are doing a scrog with a DWC setup, how do you change the water or take it out to clean it and add nutrients? I saw someone pick the whole thing up root and, all and place it in another empty bucket while he worked. That makes sense i get it, but what do you do it you have a giant plant? can you only crop it with no trestle? use a different system?
Also, what size net pot top would i use for my 5 gallon bucket? i see 6,8, and 10 inch net tops.

You can use any of the net tops. It doesn't really matter.
The easiest way to go about this is to do and RDWC. Then you just change the reservoir, and you don't have to bother the plants whatsoever.

You need to install a drain pipe at the bottom of your bucket if you are not going to go re-circulatory that way you can drain the water from the bucket, monitor the water level inside of the growing container and refill with fresh nutrients through the top of the container. A "hydrofarm" kit from General Hydroponics is the easiest way to go about this. Ask your local hydrostore dealer for them, or just go to the GH website and order them from there. For better root production go with the 10 inch net pot. More roots, more fruits!

The size of the pot does not correlate to the size of root mass in a DWC system. I used 4 inch pots and my container would be completely full with roots.

thanks a lot for everyone's help! I also brew homebrew. I have 5 gallon buckets at home with drains on the bottom for bottling your beer. the spout is about an inch or so above the bottom of the bucket. would that still work even though there will be some old water leftover? I'd have to tilt it to get it out. also it's white. I'm not sure if that's acceptable since it's not a dark color and may let light in

The problem is they aren't dark. Just go to the hydro store, they'll have the buckets and can put a drain in the bottom of it for ya right there. Or you could paint the outside of your bucket with black paint.
And inch or two of water at the bottom is no big deal.

Five gallon buckets from Lowes are 3 bucks a piece. They are light proof as well. You'll need a 13/16 "paddle" drill bit, 1/4 inch drill bit and a drill to install a Hydrofarm kit into a bucket(s). The kits are only 10 bucks at the General Hydroponics website.

Those orange buckets aren't light proof. I would still paint them black if using for hydro applications.

I believe you have the difference in buckets between those from Home Depot and Lowes confused and backwards. The 5 gallon buckets from Lowes are a very opaque grey and are light proof. The 5 gallon buckets from Home Depot are the orange ones. I would agree that the orange buckets from Home Depot would require a coat of black paint. I say avoid having to paint all together and go with the Lowes buckets for 3 bucks a piece.

So do you just follow the nutrient feeding schedule given on the bottle? for example, the fox farm shows the PPM being at a certain level for a certain week, such as 1050-1190 for week 2. do i only make the nutrient level reach that point once, and then let it go until the next feeding? would i change/drain the water 11 times for a 11 week grow? let me know if i need to clarify my questions at all! and thank you everyone, i do appreciate the help.

Yes you need to drain and refill it every week for the best results. During the peaks of flowering you will need to top off for sure. The plants can use a lot of water.
I personally never go by what the labels say. I start with half the recommended, especially since you don't know what you are doing yet.

so do you only add nutrients once a week? when you say top off do you mean just water or water and nutrients?

You have a bit of research to do before doing this man.
Yes you change it out once a week, water and nutrients at that time. And you top off with a nutrient water solution throughout the week as needed, to keep levels at optimum.
