Quick Question On Nutrients
    #8330 - 04/22/08 11:06 AM (16 years, 7 months ago)

I could probably do some searching on this but might as well keep new threads rolling here. Are there some pretty common meters or tests to determine nutrient levels, or is controlling nutrients levels more of a subtle art?

You mean like a TDS meter?

Quite possibly, yes. :hehehe:

Well, I did a product search on Google, but I'm a bit unclear as to what that thing actually measures. At any rate, I'm definitely talking about something similar, just that it measures the main nutrients for marijuana (nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium).

TDS meters measure the amount of nutrients in your solution but doesn't show the specific nutrient. They are very useful especially for hydro.

yeah, a TDS meter is really helpful. I was mixing nutes at about 500 ppm before flowering, and it was extremely helpful to know I was giving them the right amount instead of guessing. When I just eyeballed the mixture I ended up around 2500 ppm, which would have been WAAY too much for them to handle. You can get a cheap one for around $30 if you search hard enough.

yea you need a tester, also dont forget to test your water before you test it with the nutrients in it.if your goal is say you want 600 ppm and your water is 250 to start out with then you have to factor that in.

good luck

I still have a $20 ebay meter from 5 years ago I just calibrate it once in awhile and it still works fine. I do want to upgrade to a multi meter w/ remote probe but those things are like $200

also i don't recommend a cheap one, look and read reviews and see what everyone likes. i use one that i never have to be calibrated, i save on buying the fluid used to do so and it has been very good to me and very accurate.

Thanks for the help everyone. My friend was definitely going to get a good pH meter but wasn't sure if something like this was out there (but was pretty sure it was :hehehe:). He definitely doesn't want to see burnt leaves or malnourished plants.

That top one is almost the exact TDS meter I use, and I have no complaints so far. Of course, I've only used it for a month, but given my track record the fact that it's still intact is a pretty good sign.
