Early guess on sexing these plants
    #708399 - 01/19/14 01:46 AM (10 years, 9 months ago)

Hi guys.

Just doing an outdoor grow in Australia (summertime here), and wanting some early guesses on gender.

I've heard that the plant that starts out taller and spindlier tends to be the male.

These two were started about 8 weeks ago:

And these two about 12 weeks ago:

The plants have been growing under the same conditions, so I'm wondering if the taller ones are males. In fact I'm hoping so as I would love to do some pollination and get some seeds.

I can't see closer signs of gender yet as they haven't flicked to flowering (still 14 hours of light a day at the mo here).

Cheers

There is no way to sex those from those pics. Yes male plants tend to get taller but that information is not enough to sex the plants so just forget that. The only way to sex the plant is to see a preflower during veg growth or wait till flowering is induced.

Thanks Magash, I figured that but I guess I was just jumping the gun hoping for some early good news. I'll keep an eye out for preflowers which should be starting soon, and post some pics once I get those. I just don't want to leave the fella in with the ladies for too long, if he is a fella that is ...

As for Funny Flatulence, I dunno mate. Might have my timing wrong, it might only be 10 weeks, not 12, but yeah, mine all seem to be small

It's my first time so I'm learning a lot and probably not getting everything right. They have just been in small pots and mostly inside (not a proper indoor grow, just window-sill stylee) until last month or so. I am trying to give them nutes every couple of weeks but not really sure why they are so small compared to others. I haven't topped these ones or anything either ...

If you have any suggestions about why they are small, I'm all ears!

My first guesses are, inadequate light, overwater, and over nutrient.  Those are WAY too small for nutes, unless you aren't using soil, i.e. a soiless medium.

I actually haven't given them much nutes, sorry I got my facts a bit mixed around before. If they are overwatered, it has only been for the last few weeks, and they have been pretty small the whole way since germing them.

How much does pot size affect things? They are only in like 2 or 3 litre (half gallon?) pots. Might need to up that a bit. What do you guys think?

Soil Growers:
1. Are you growing from seed or clones?
2. How old are your plants?
3. How tall are your plants?
4. What size containers are they planted in?
5. What is your soil mix?
6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use and how much you give per watering?
7. What is the pH of your water?
8. What kind of fertilizer do you use and what is its NPK ratio?
9. Do you foliar feed or spray your plants with anything?
10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights")
11. How close are your lights to the plants?
12. What size is your grow space in square feet?
13. What is the temperature and humidity in your grow space?
14. What is the pH of the soil?
15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space?
16. How much experience do you have growing?

Filling this out can help

Well, as I am in the pursuit of knowledge, here are my answers to the relevant questions. If someone wants to help me out that would be great.

1. Are you growing from seed or clones? Seed
2. How old are your plants? 10 weeks
3. How tall are your plants? 15cm or 6 inches
4. What size containers are they planted in? 3 litre (3/4 gallon) pots
5. What is your soil mix? Standard potting mix
6. How often do you water and what type of water do you use and how much you give per watering? They WERE getting watered lightly twice a day (too much I know but it was an autocycle looking after a bunch of different crops and I had no other options at that time). Now they are getting watered once every couple of days.
7. What is the pH of your water? Should be between 7 and 9
10. What kind of lights do you use and how many watts combined? (HPS, MH, fluorescent, halogen, incandescent "plant lights") Outdoor grow, so just the sun!
14. What is the pH of the soil? No idea
15. Have you noticed any insect activity in your grow space? Minimal, nothing is eating the plants though.
16. How much experience do you have growing? First time

Cheers ladies and gents.

Ok, first off, if you can get us the actual name of the soil that would be great.  That would help.

Second, you are still overwatering.  You need to wait for the soil to dry out, then water thoroughly.

Third, get a pH meter.  Somewhere between 7 and 9 is super vague and means you have no idea.

Thanks for the info mate.

Soil is Gardener's Choice Premium Potting Mixture - I can't find it online but it's a fairly bog-standard mix.

Re: pH, I do have absolutely no idea. 7-9 is an educated guess based on the water-quality reports in my town. I'm not really making this grow too professional as it's my first one so I'm just trying to learn from my mistakes at the moment, and if the pH is not optimal but passable, that will have to do for now!

Thanks for the tip re: watering. I grow a lot of herbs and veggies and flowers, so I guess I find it hard to understand how little watering these green ladies need compared to other crops. But I will take this on board.

Thanks HA, appreciate your tips and patience.

You're gonna have to help yourself a little here man. Guessing what your ph will be by what your local water districts report  is just setting yourself up for failure. You can get a cheap ph test kit for 5 bucks and test your water/nutrient solution. Save yourself the headache.

And 7-9 is not passable.  If it's in the 8 and up range consistently, you can get a crap load of problems.

Hey guys, I'm back and my plants are looking much better. Cut out the water to let the plants dry out properly, repotted them into pots three times bigger, and things have really picked up.

I'm hoping to go back to my original question and get some sexing advice now. Here's a pic of one of them which I'm pretty sure is a female (white hairs coming out of it). Can I get a confirmation?

I'll upload pics of the other one I suspect might be a male in a day or two.

Any help much appreciated ladies and gents

Thanks mate, I should have explained better - both pics are from the same plant. There are definitely white hairs poking out all over her here and there so that should pretty much confirm it, shouldn't it?

And here's the one I THINK might be a male. Spotting what appear to be staminates (to my untrained eyes). Would love an opinion from an expert. Both shots of the same plant (think there's a weird filter on the second shot, apologies).
