Threaded view doesn't really expand when you click the links, it loads that single post and shows the structure only. It turns out to be very useless.
What I'm thinking is that the next page link just collapses the page your on into that list. It would save you the infinite scroll of "show all" in a long thread. You don't need to show the threads nested either, you could just use a hover color, so that when you when you mouse over a line it highlights the original post in the chronological list. Have the option to show the nested structure, but ditch it for streamlined viewing--its too confusing because not every post gets perfectly RE:'d to, as well as multiple person responses make them get lost in the structure.
I think it would help the thread viewing process. It would be a major update to the message boards and a feature I've never seen yet. Have the option so you can keep the previous replies list expanded, but jump down to the new threads in flat mode by default. I was thinking about it having not just previous pages, but next pages, but seems like you would just want to keep it going forward for simplicity and keep the page feature used, and rarely do you need to skip ahead that much, its usually re-reading a few posts that have you flipping through the pages.
ALSO if you could do this with the reply page that would be awesome as well, since its good to sometimes review more than the one you were replying to. Maybe you could notify when a new thread is made while your posting as an alternate to the new post warning page you get before posting, maybe a sound to tell you to check the new post in the list? Have the list update with a fireball icon next to it or something like that.
