Hi, I have been lurking around the forums for awhile and finally decided to post. I want to start a Grow room in my basement.. I have 500 bucks to work with... I have been looking at HTG supply and RVF supply and want to know if there is a better place to shop..I am wanting to buy 1 400w HPS and 1 400w MH... but really don't know which is the best bang for my buck.. Any advice is greatly appreciated..

for a basement please step up to 600w, you will be glad that you did; but i check ebay a lot; a deal is a deal you know, i have seen setups for $120USD for both on 400w systems. buy a grow tent too unless you plan to have more than 4 plants or SCROG

Thanks for the info... I have no problem stepping up to 600w.. far as grow tent i was planning to use some 2x4 and nails to make the grow tent with some black plastic..two small rooms side by side 4x4x how ever tall my basement is.. As far as ebay goes.. do have any a reliable dealer you use or just cheapest.. I am just wondering if there that big of a difference between brands of lighting systems.

just be wary of really really cheap ballasts, they're cheap for a reason. Either really crappy materials are used, they're soldered together by someone who might know what they're doing, or both. I'm sure that you can find some good ballasts and such for a good price, but you definitely don't want thing causing a short and starting a fire.
You also want black and white poly, black for the outside with the white on the inside. White will help reflect your light while the black will help block it out from view. If you use all black plastic you're going to lose some light on the inside of your tent since it absorbs it.

get a switchable ballast either way it will save a bit of money in most cases.
I use xtrasun ballast's from Hydrofarm
I buy all my equipment from my local hydro shop so I have no idea were the best deal is for ballast's
oh yea.. do not over look ventilation In & out!!! atleast a 4-6in for a 600w
I used a 4in vortex blower with a 1000w tho.. less noise.

I like your idea, sir. As others have said, go with a 600w ballast, and make sure it is of the digital switchable variant. I bought my lights at a local Hydroponics store: 600W ballast: $199.95 600W HPS bulb: $48.00 600W MH bulb: $48.00 Total: ~$300.
This leaves you ~$200 for nutrients, building supplies, ventilation, seeds, and your grow medium setup (be it soil or hydroponics), which is cutting it kind of close.
Just look around for deals, and you can probably come out just fine!
Good luck.

Hey, I am new to indoor growing as well. well really, growing in general. I know you guys all have a ton of knowledge and there are some great guides on here, but is there a place I can get like a starters kit? like, everything all at once?
Thanks guys, be gentle, I'm new...

You have resurrected a 4 year old discussion. Just fyi.
To answer your question... Yeah you can!
You can buy pre-built cabinets like this (pretty stealthy - maybe good for bedrooms and semi public areas): http://www.dampkring.nl/18319/g-kit-bonanza-1200w.html
Just a barebone set like this (good for sticking into your closet): http://www.head-nature.com/tree/652/Start-Up-Sets/article/04535/Advanced-Growing-Kit-600-Watts-for-10-15-Plants.xhtml
Or you could get a tent set that you build yourself and a easy soil growing kit along with it and set it up in some room: http://www.head-nature.com/tree/646/Dark-Room-Growtent/article/07198/Dark-Room-II-120-Growtent-with-600-Watts-Cooltube.xhtml http://www.head-nature.com/tree/649/Nutrients,-Fertilizers-Soil/article/04320/Bio-Bizz-Soil-Nutrient-Set-All-Mix.xhtml
Take a look at the links I gave you. Those links will give you a very good idea of what things you need to get to grow, and what those things are called.

as peopel said get a good quailty ballast. the cheap shit from china will burn out on you real fast or burn your house down..
agree on a 600 wat dimable digital ballast.
i woudl use the ballast at 400wat for when teh plants are in veg and 600wats when teh plants are in flower. Helps cut down the power usage a little.. pluse when the plants are really just starting to grow there 400wats will be more then enoff.
i just did a quick ebay searh and found this ballast a 600wat dim digital so u can use mh for vegging.. and hp for flowring http://www.ebay.com/itm/Digital-Ballast-600W-Solis-Tek-/251358611774?pt=US_Hydroponics&hash=item3a8624093e
this is a good qualy brand ballast.
