RDWC, Totes too big?

So Im planning on doing SOG using self made 3" net pots with lava rock.
The problem is the cups hang down about 5" but my totes are about 15" deep, which means I will need a LOT of water and im running 4 of the totes. They are about 2'x 1.5' x 15"
Any input?

4x4
4 totes fit just about perfectly with about 2 to 3 inches between each. They are 18 gallon totes

Are they too big?
But now that I've thought about it and realized there will be 12 plants in each they are just fine. (right?)
I was just worried about how much water would be needd to fill them completely then also circulate.

Well it's hard to have them too big. The issues you would come across with too big of a container, are going to be air and water pumps that aren't big enough. Mostly air pumps.

Okay well let me give you the run down of what my plan is, hopefully you can help me out. These boards are pretty dead (but im a active member of the shroomery).
I Have 4 of those 18 gallons totes that are going to have 12 plants each (going SOG) in a DWC system (originally wanted RDWC but its not looking good for that plan.
Anyways my main question is, since im not too familiar with hydro is that... Does my reservoir need to be substantially larger than the rest of the totes?
My plan was to have the 4 totes all connected to the main external res, BUT of the same size with the water pump and multiple airstones in it that aerate then the pump will circulate the oxygenated water to the 4 totes. (please help me out there)
But I wanted to do a perpetual grow where two totes when into flowering then my other two go in 30 days later. But I would have to make a separate res for those two wouldnt I? And get another pump for those?
Sorry i'm just really trying to set it up perfect but am running into a few problems I cant figure out how to best deal with.
Thanks man

If youre wanting to do a perpetual, yes, you will have to do more than one res.
Yes, your res should ALWAYS be larger than the total gallons of your containers. It's not 100% necessary, but I've always found it to make things easier, and give you healthier plants. I have seen people pull it off with a reservoir at all, just keep topping it off on a daily basis.
It's not much water and nutes to draw on if the res is the same size of the other totes. You will have to be topping it off alot.

So I need like two separate 30-40 gallon totes to feed into my 4 18 gallon totes correct? Would a 185 gph pump suffice for that? I just bought a 396gph pump but could return it for two of those.

Yeah a 185 gph pump will work.
