How are my plants looking? Ready to top?

These guys are about 4 weeks old. 2 weeks in the little square pucks under a humidity dome and now in a proper pot. For fertilizer, I'm using FloraNova Grow 7-4-10. I am using about 1/2 teaspoon per gallon still, as I think these are still counted as seedlings. However, the lower leaves are turning brown and I'm just wondering what's up with that. I'm using 4 CFL bulbs. Not sure about what strain they are. I just pick out seeds when I find them and see what grows. I expect half of these will turn out to be males anyway. Any advice at this stage? Also, is this the right stage to top them? What do I do for that? I've heard you just pinch off the middle leaves with your fingers. Is there a better way?

I would let those veg for another two weeks at least. I have had success topping plants that small but its not recommended. I would wait for at least one more node and set of leaves. When i grow from seed i usually veg for 2 weeks, flip the lights to sex them, and then put them back into veg for another 2 weeks after sexing before flowering. Its during those 2 vegging weeks after sexing that I personely like to top. If you top before sexing do you think the stress may cause more males???
Also maybe top a few now and see how it goes? Topping relocates auxins from the growing tip to the lateral shoots, so maybe if you top now the lateral shoots will come in quicker?
Use the search for a tek on topping. Dont know who owns the rights to this pic but it helped me understand:

I'm pretty new at this, and I feel like a lot of what you said went over my head Zombi. What do you mean "flip the lights to sex them"? I thought the plants were in "veg" mode from seed until they were big enough to induce flowering, and when I see "veg", I think 18 hours of light per day. Can you help me understand that? Are you saying I can find out which of these guys are males at this early stage?

at any point you can turn your light schedule to 12/12. When you do this, within 1-2 weeks your plant will begin to show signs of either being a male or female, pistils and hairs for female, pollen sacks for males.
Many people who unsure of the sex of their plant, will turn to 12/12 for 1-2 weeks, if it shows sign of female then you put the light schedule back to 18/6 or 24/0 ( which ever you prefer, both are veg light schedules ), if its a male then you trash it and wont have to waste your time with it anymore because now you know. This will cause the plant to go back into its veg state and it will continue to grow as normal, with out flowering.
You can veg plants for really as long as you want and they aren't going to fully induce flowering.. Its when you take that initial change in the light schedule that determines the end of veg and the beginning of its flowering stage.
As long as you have 5-7 nodes, IMO it doesn't matter when you top.

You should be able to sex them by the pre-flowers which will appear around 3-4 weeks into veg. You should be able to find a pic somewhere on the forum to see what to look for.

Those bottom leaves will die 9/10 times when starting from seed, at least for me. The name starts with a C I believe.

Okay, so going back to this sexing bit...in a week or 2, switch from 18/6 to 12/12 for what...2 weeks? Is that enough to identify male plants?

You don't need to switch your lighting schedule until you're ready to flower. Just keep the same schedule for 3-4 weeks to determine sex.

Okay, so I'll just let them grow and post more pictures in a month then. Now I just need to decide if I should FIM or TOP.

Ugh, just top. Fim is a waste of effort, it rarely works out the way it's supposed to.

Yea I hate FIM, I think out of the 20+ times I tried it I think it may have worked like twice. After that I just started topping the little bitches.
