CFL vs. HPS for veg?

Looking for some input on what would be best for vegging. Right now I have a 1-month old plant that was just recently tied down to start this training:
Growth has been pretty slow, and I'm broke so I can't afford to get another MH bulb right now, vegging under 52 watts of 6500K CFL. Should I just step up the wattage for the CFLs (Which I have plenty of, it's just a pain in the ass the rig up.) or would it be better to just veg under the 400w HPS I have?

Thanks, that's what I was hoping to hear. Since it's so young, should I dim to 50% or will the full 400 be fine for it?

There is never a time when cfl's are better then HID.

Good to know, I didn't know if the stretch from using HPS to veg would be enough to justify the 6500K CFL.

I planned on taking clones at around 2 months, vegging for at least 2 months, probably closer to 3. But I also only have 1 plant so I'm trying to get enough to last me until the clones are ready to flower.
The 5-gallon pot I'm using is has a 37-inch circumference, so I'm shooting for a three-footer after it's all said and done.

3 feet? Tall? 3 months is a long ass veg time unless you're trying to grow a tree. I mean, you'll get a giant plant, but it'll be a bitch to keep trained, AND you're looking at a 180+ day grow (and that's optimistic) after you get through flowering. 30 day veg is quite adequate, 60 days, your plant is gonna be 6-7 feet tall (untrained), 90 days, well, you better be using an HID light just to penetrate the canopy!

Not to mention that a 5-gallon pot isn't big enough for a 90 day veg; it'll get root bound.

Looking back on notes from my last (first) grow, I doubt I would've went for 3 months, but I get what you mean. My first grow had a 3-foot tall plant, vegged for JUST under 60 days using CFL, and the buckets were less than 2 gallons each.
I had plenty of problems, but ended up with a little over 2 oz. of great bud. http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/645972/page/1
After making a LOT of improvements, (FFOF, FF Trio soil nutes, LST unstead of just letting it grow, bigger soil container, breeder seeds instead of mexi-brick.) I feel like getting another 3-foot (Or taller.) plant should be no problem, especially while tying down. And yeah I wouldn't even attempt to flower it if I wasn't using HPS.

I veg 30 days in 3 gallon smart pots and my plants are definitely bigger than 3 feet. Now that you'll be causing your plant less stress, and fulfilling its needs better, yours will be bigger with a shorter veg.

Gotcha. How much can I expect it to put on during the stretch when the switch to flower comes? And at the risk of going off-topic, when I moved it into the HPS area, I saw two roots sticking out about 3 inches from the bottom of the bucket. Will these be a problem? I thought if the roots got light it could be a fairly serious issue for the whole plant.

It'll double in size after the switch.
With regard to your second question, the exposed roots will die, but the rest of the plant will be fine.
