so, mentally unstable friends (serious post)

I have a friend I was really tight with in high school. He was always pretty odd and out there, but I always tried to be his bro because he really needed someone. He was the type to tell you a 10 minute long joke full of intricate details and then say he forgot the punchline. I was one of the only people who would listen to him, and it was admittedly difficult even for me.
Fast forward 5 years. I rarely see him, and when I do I just can't listen to it anymore. I'm out of practice and he has gotten worse.
He posts the craziest shit on his facebook. Generally giant pseudo intelligent rants about nothing. Just attempts at making sense that really don't. 9/10 times they are innocent and stupid, but once in a while its something disturbing. I feel like its probably similar to a real psychopaths ranting.
If it was just stuff affecting him, I wouldn't care. But sometimes I actually worry I might wake up and find out he was the next guy shooting up a movie theater or elementary school. Nothing so straightforward is ever posted, just stuff that makes me a little uncomfortable and concerned.
Should something like that happen, I would hate myself for not doing something. But at the same time, what the Fuck can be done? It's not like there are sanity police, and even if there were, its freedom of speech. I just feel like he's pretty unstable. I don't think I could talk to him about it because we have grown apart.
The kid I used to know never would have hurt anyone without being provoked...but I know for sure he has a lot of anger he holds onto.
So, is all I can do is just sit back and hope I don't get grazed by a stray bullet? Wtf...

Why should that mean it isn't real?

First of all, don't get too involved. That would be your biggest mistake with this person.
I used to have a friend for 17 years, always knew he was psycho or whatever. He never had anyone except me and his anger. I took him in numerous times probably saved his life a good couple times at least. Than his internal wiring came out as a psychotic angry person and now we are not friends, I have a subpoena at my house and he will have a restraining order at his eventually.
People are insane, even when you're just trying to keep them afloat, horrible things can happen.
If you were to get in too deep with this person, it could back fire and ricochet all over the fucking place. Try to help him if you want, but do it from a distance, maybe contact his parents if he has any.

Your friend sounds like me, minus the long posts on facebook... then again, he is just posting random thoughts on facebook... I often drift in and out of compulsive phases with facebook as well...
It might be his way of trying to get attention. He might be trying to initiate some dialogue.

I, myself, get concerned when I see people posting weird things on Facebook. It's a hub of people trying to get attention, a lot of the times by posting the weirdest and deepest things on your face book time line.
some people are crying for attention/help through face book.

A lot of the mass murderers and such have given prior warning to their shootings. Facebook, YouTube, a simple note, poem, whatever. There is always warning, no matter how subtle. So, I would just try to pay attention and read between the lines.
As far as getting personal, I would be careful. You don't want to end up on the business end of his gun.

You're obviously concerned for a reason and how you put it tells me you have every right to feel the way you do. Try and meet up with him and talk things over, you can be subtle enough to avoid provoking a negative reaction, just bond. It may be harder now but if you care enough you'll at least try.

Does anyone know what this dude is talking about? ^
I thought I was too high to understand but now I'm not high and still don't lol.
Good advice the rest of you. I see him sometimes at parties but that's not usually somewhere I wanna serious up.
