Question about lighting

Hey I'm trying to make a decision about creating a dual style grow like most people, plants vegetating waiting to be into the flowering room and replace the plants that just finished flowering. I already have a 600watt HPS/MH interchangeable ballast, I don't want to spend another few hundred dollars on another ballast to support another high powered light.
Is it feasible to use LEDs or CFLs for the vegetative cycle and then use my HID HPS for the flowering cycle? If so whats better, CFL or LED (just for vegetative)
I tried searching all over the net for info on whether LEDs and CFLs are good for vegetative and whats better but it all comes up with info on the flowering stage. Any help is appreciated!
Light recommendations, LED, CFL, size, wattage all that good stuff.. thankyou!

They will work. I've seen plenty of people using CFL's and LED's for vegging and for flowering. I would recommend a good quality LED over CFL's, but a good quality LED is gonna be just as pricey as getting a new HID light... lol.

Go with the fluro if you're looking to save cash. You'll be fine with them.

LED does very well in veg. I wouldn't waste the cash buying a bunch of cfl's and fixtures that aren't going to do nearly as good and need to be replaced. T5's are good but still going to cost to replace bulbs. You'll save money buying a good LED thats suppose to last 10 years.
how big of an area are you trying to veg in? what about flower area?

vegging area is about 2.5ft by 4ft. I'm currently using my MH600watt for that but as I said previously I want it replaced with a light that runs cheaper so I can use my 600watt ballast and light for the flowering area which is the same size.
I only need to know what to choose for vegging, CFL or LED, I've heard not much about LED as it seems to be all biased tests that companies do. I only want to use the new CFL or LED for vegging, I know that LED cover specific wavelengths of light for different parts of the photo period. Which colour wavelength is better for Vegging? Blue?
PS: I wouldn't mind spending a similar amount of cash on an LED if it were about as costly as a 600watt HID. As long as it is cheaper to run

Just get a shop light for your vegging. Cheap and works great.

Shop lights? as in your regular everyday flouro tube? How many watts, lights, would that be to be the equivalent of my MH600watt?

Yup, and no. Of course not. But it's your veg, you don't need a ton of light. Do you realize how many CFL's it would take to equal a 600 watt HID?
I keep my mothers and the clones, babies in a tent with 2 shop lights.

Oh yeah silly question, so what kind of wattage should i be looking at in tubes? their true wattage or their equivalent? T5? T8? T12? high output? I've done tonnes of research just wondering from someone who may have had experience?

2 bulb, t-5 setup, with all parts purchased from home depot. They are not the high output ones you get from the grow store, but its what I've been using to veg for a long while now lol. Total cost was right around 40$.
Edit: should say that while I did use the 2 bulb setup for a while, I did eventually buy another fixture and banded them together.

I just went to Fred Meyers, bought a 2 bulb 4 foot shop light, I believe they are t-12's, and bought the plant/aquarium bulbs for em. They work great.

ebay: t5 4ft HO 6500k. DONT get the used ones, they should be about 150 for a 4x4, 4x8 for $200 new with bulbs. 54w per bulb, a 4x4 does well for vegging in that size. I'll be getting rid of one in favor of an all blue LED one day.

fwiw, I use a little over 150w of cfl for veg and it works great. you should be all set with the t5. I wish I had the room to fit those in.

Why should that mean it isn't real?
