Metal Halide lights

I was perusing my local craigslist and found some old factory MH lights with ballasts for 10 each. They are 400W and come with bulbs. Does anyone think I would be able to use these for a veg room project I will be starting in the future. The room is approximately 15' x 8' and I plan to modify the lights so I can use more standard reflectors. The things are tall and I am hoping I can detach the ballast from the light fixture.
Heres the link

If you're handy with electrical work and you're not worried anout burning down your house if you screw up, i'd say go for it! Honestly, i'd just get the cheap fukkers and use em as is until you can afford to get ones that are designed for indoor growing. I see ones like what you described for anywhere from $50-75 each. I can't justify that much when I can get a brand new, with warrantee, 1k switchable ballast for a bill...

I'm pretty good with residential wiring so I believe I can handle it. Thanks for the reply.

Then go ahead, man. I've seen a few of these units that have been modified like that. Well, not seen, but people told me they use em... lol

i'd buy a whole gang of those babies. louisville isn't that far from here. might have to take a road trip. couldn't you just use a 400 watt HPS conversion bulb if you wanted to flower?

it's absolutely clear.

I had the same idea about the HPS bulbs in the MH fixtures. It will be a few months dowb the road and from what I've heard so far about the conversion bulbs, I think when it gets near flowering time I'll buy a couple of 1000w HPS setups instead of using the conversion bulbs. Always looking for a bargain!
