Well is it jumping around, or is it climbing up there and staying at 8 something?

soil test meter? i have an analog soil test meter. it's the only way to fly. i have a digital PH pen for water testing. but i always keep a drip test kit for a backup.

There are two pouches of pH calibration that came with mine. one is 6.86 (the second decimal place is so you can calibrate it right between 6.8 and 6.9). The second is 'borax' @ 4.00 that you test the pen with after you calibrate it. Those were powder and I had to mix them with water, I had to buy some storage jars for the stuff so I could calibrate it in the future.
There should be a level that you submerge the meter in and after a few seconds it will stabilize. It does not hold your number, so it will go up when it is not in the water. Read it while it's still in the water.
I have some test strips that aged and stopped reading accurately--watch out for aging products. A small vial/dropper style test kit should be simple enough to use. The gen hydro ph adjust kit comes with one. It's good to have one of those around to double check the pH meter from time to time, but harder to get an precise reading.

Which meter do you have? Can it be re-calibrated? I get the bottles of 4.0 and 7.0 calibration fluid from GH and use that. Works great. If it is jumping upward like that, my guess is it needs to be recalibrated (especially since you changed the batteries. The calibration might have been erased).

yeah, I usually have to calibrate every time I change the sensor and batteries. I also try to calibrate it once per day and make sure the sensor is always kept moist

Store it in solution?? I had never heard this... I just knew you gotta keep it damp. "If it dries, it dies" is the phrase I've always heard.

You keep it in an electrode conditioning solution. Not a calibration solution.
Tank, every manufacturer recommends storing it in solution.

Hmm... ok. I've never had a brand new-in-box ph pen before... lol. I've always had used ones. Except one, and it was a pos from china that wouldn't hold its calibration for shit.

<<<3. Keep the sponge is moist. If necessary, add some pH4 solution to the sponge. The moist sponge ensures that the glass electrode stays hydrated.>>>
as the above says, the entire idea is to keep the meter sensor from drying out. Which can be easily accomplished by simply keeping it moist (I use a piece of paper towel that I soak with calibration solution)
naturally the same can be achieved by storing it directly into a solution, though it isn't neccasery

I just took a glass, put a latex glove over it and then cut a slit in it. Then I can just store my pen in the solution itself.
